Jimmy Anderson's day, but Stokes had ideas


It was meant to be Jimmy Anderson's day, the day on which England's most successful bowler passed 500 Test wickets, but Ben Stokes had other ideas.

With the West Indies on 78/3 and Stokes yet to be introduced to the attack, few would have expected an all-rounder who bowled just five overs in the final innings as England lost the second Test in dramatic fashion at Headingley last week to have such a profound impact on this game.

But Stokes came in to bowl fifteen overs without a break, in which he swung the ball both ways and recorded career-best figures of 6-22.

He wasn't by any means the only of England's bowler's (or indeed West Indies' later in the day) to get the ball moving, but he did draw more swing from this overcast first day at the first ever September Test at Lord's than anyone else.

Beyond his six wickets there were inside edges that skidded past the stumps to safety and dropped...
