An Indian sting

To Pune, then, and the curious case of Pandurang Salgonakar, groundsman at the MCA Stadium. Last week, Salgonakar was caught in a sting by a team of reporters from India Today, who posed as bookmakers and persuaded him to pass on information about the pitch before the second ODI between India and New Zealand. Salgonakar promised that the pitch would have good bounce, that the team batting first would score 337, and that the team batting second would be able to chase it down. He also allowed the reporters to examine the wicket first-hand. Salgonakar, who had previously prepared the pitch used in the first Test between India and Australia last March which was rated “poor” by the ICC’s match referee Chris Broad, has been dismissed and the ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit is investigating.
