Five days after a seemingly unoccupied oil products tanker called the Gulfstream was found spewing oil-like deposits off the coast of Canoe Bay near the Cove Eco-Industrial and Business Park, the mess has impacted reefs and the coast from Rockley Bay to Scarborough and much of Tobago’s southwestern coastline. Authorities were still working to track the origins of the vessel that caused the emergency—which was also searched by divers for bodies when it was discovered.
The FFOS has, meanwhile, blasted Trinidad and Tobago for failing to update its maritime policies and protect marine resources, as the owners of vessels bearing a “Flag of Convenience” can’t be pursued by the law, even after causing damage. Aboud said there were many abandoned vessels in the Gulf of Paria, as well as fishing and cargo vessels operating within T&T’s waters, that bore a “Flag of Convenience”.
Aboud further warned of potential hazards to residents near the spill.

Trinidad's Coast Guard found that at least two vessels allegedly bound for Guyana - a tugboat and a barge - were involved in an incident that led to the spill, the National Security ministry said in a release on Wednesday.
"The barge was being towed by a tug, the Solo Creed from Panama," the ministry said, adding that it remains unknown whether any lives were lost in the incident. Authorities in Panama, Aruba and Guyana have been contacted by Trinidad and regional group Caricom to gather information as part of the investigation.
The tugboat and the barge were identified in satellite pictures taken three days before the incident in the Caribbean Sea, reviewed by TankerTrackers.com. According to the monitoring service, the vessels were heading to St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Hard to believe, even in the murky world of international shipping, that, more than a week after the event, the authorities don't know who the owners/operators are. This ship's not a tiddler - it's over 300 feet long! Probably being kept quiet for legal purposes.

the oil spill was only declared a national disaster by TEMA on Thursday 8th February. PM was there by Sunday. Not that he could miraculously solve it. What is important to find out is who the owner is, and where it was destined for. Investigations have shown the boat was destined for Guyana so it is simply a matter of finding out who the owner is. I don't think it should be that difficult. The guyanese government has already confirmed that the vessels were destined for them but did not arrive as anticipated

“There’s a sense that the politicians try to run everything themselves. And it should not have been the minister to respond. He should have come after the technical team had arrived. So, the problems are much deeper than the symptoms you are seeing. The ministry has the Chief Director of Operations responsible for that, the Permanent Secretary would have gotten involved too. The minister probably went at the right time he was supposed to go but somebody should have been there two days earlier. The system is broken.”

Experts are issuing a cautionary message over the aging oil pipelines in T&T, with some exceeding their intended lifespan and suffering from corrosion.
These pipelines, spanning over 1000 miles across both land and water, are in need of urgent attention.
Occasionally, we receive reports of land and Gulf of Paria leaks when such reaches fishing villages.
However, there is a lack of knowledge on the heavy oil and condensates that drop to the bottom of the gulf.
Fishermen say their best catches are around such drilling platforms. These fish are unfit for human consumption.
T&T, Cancer poses a significant threat, leading to a distressing demise. The numbers will increase over the next decade.
