100 MURDERS IN 67 DAYS – Highway killing brings up grim milestone

RICHARD "Mansion'"Mark became the country’s 100th murder victim for the year when he was killed on the morning of March 7.
Mark, who escaped an attempt on his life on the night of March 6, was killed just hours later on March 7 when gunmen pulled alongside his car on the Churchill Roosevelt Highway and unleashed a hail of bullets.

Between January 1 and March 7 2023, Trinidad and Tobago recorded 112 murders. The final murder toll that year was 576.

In 2022, despite the comparative January 1 to March 7 murder toll standing at 101 murders, the year ended with a record-breaking 605 murders.

35 bullets for La Romaine mechanic

A mother stood in her gallery moaning loudly as undertakers left with the body of her son, Ryan Abdool, shortly after gunmen fired 35 bullets at him at the family’s Southern Main Road, La Romaine home on Saturday.

Abdool, 46, a divorced father of two, was shot while sitting in the driver's seat of a black Range Rover.

Reports indicate that as he returned to his home and parked the vehicle around 12.05 pm, two gunmen, who were following him, alighted from a white vehicle and started firing shots from what appeared to be automatic weapons.

Port of Spain disgusted by crime rate as country passes 100 murders in 2024

HAVING recorded 100 murders in the first 67 days of the year, Newsday took to the streets of Port of Spain on the 68th day to get the public's views on that state of affairs on Friday, and one word was being repeatedly used to describe the situation – "disgusting."

Carl Cyrus, a security officer at a law firm, called the crime rate disgusting and embarrassing, saying, “For a small country with 1.5 million, this is unacceptable. We need to do better.”
He called for the return of the hangman, saying stiffer penalties were needed, particularly for guns, drugs and murder.

Cyrus believes home invasions are also on the rise and the government must do more to fight crime. He said investing more resources in sports and library services and encouraging young people to read could help.

Police probe deaths of 3 men

The bodies of three men were found in varying stages of decomposition at three separate areas between Friday and yesterday morning.

In the most recent incident, the body of Wesley Peters was found in a house at Ravine Sable Road, Longdenville, Chaguanas at 1 pm yesterday. Peters was found slumped on a bed.

Police believe Peters may have been dead a day before he was found based on the bloating of his body.

On Friday afternoon meanwhile, the decomposing body of 62-year-old Ramesh Boodram was found along a riverbank at Davis Street, Arouca.

Police said they were notified that the body was found about 50 metres from his home at 3.30 pm.
