Kirk McKenzie: Playing the Cover-Drive.

Yadi 2024-03-27 00:32:38

Kirk McKenzie, you need to have a talk with Jeffrey Dujon or Jimmy Adams.

No good batsman gets bowled or inside edges a cover-drive.

Yadi 2024-03-27 00:37:23

The off-drive and or cover-drive is the SAFEST SHOT in all of cricket.

Because it REQUIRES that you watch the ball until it meets the middle of your bat'

Furthermore, this shot is executed ... with the ball UNDER your eyes.

If you are a CRICKETER - you just can't get this WRONG.

Well, it says that Kirk has some work to do since after 3 rounds in regional cricket he has not passed fifty yet. All of the Jamaican batsmen have been inconsistent although most have international experience. What are the coaches doing?

Ball under eyes is key..if you reach for the ball there is a good chance that you underedge

It appears to me that he is premeditating his shots ...

while the bowler in in his delivery stride.

A batsman needs to know, if he is driving a ball that is RISING or a half-volley.

Driving - on the rise - requires that you play LATER ... to make adjustments for swing.

Hope he is taking your advice

The coaches should be reminding him of that technique

Fellow posters the technical flaw is as yet to be addressed. Many times today's fans and observers cheer a cover-drive for which the batsman poses after the shot.
But, that shot was executed purely on hand-eye coordination and not technique. If you are bowled or inside edged while attempting a drive the flaws are
a. Lack of movement (back and across or press fahwud and across)
b. Front pad and bat close together.
any inside edge off an offside front foot shot must ricochet into pad. Ants should have difficulty getting through. Just watch CGG an IVA.
If the movement and the closeness of bat and pad are there (all that done with enough time to wait on the ball i.e. let it come to you) that means you aren't reaching...cannot be reaching for the ball.

Just watch CGG an IVA.

Was IVA that correct as a technician, I would prefer RBK and C.C Hunte in that role.

his technique is very, very under-rated! Even when he moved outside off to turn to leg bat and pad were close together.
That's why men like Immy and Hadlee got him LB instead of bowled many times. They'd plug at middle/off prepared to
give up a few boundaries and twos with the hope he'd miss one. Mind you the two you mentioned had even better techniques
but I put Viv because of more available clips driving through off...more than Duj and others. Prince Lara was good but there
were times you could see a lil space, he just always middled it and cancelled that 'weakness'

Ok.good analysis on Viv and Lara.

In reply to Brerzerk

Any inside-edge to either a cover-drive or an off-drive ...

can only go directly into the front pad.

It ought not to be possible for any batsman to be inside-edging a

front-foot drive ... to the Wicket Keeper.

Faults

#1.) Your eyes were not on the ball.

#2.) Your front leg was not to the pitch of the ball.

#3.) You were slashing with your bat away from ur pad.

Yet he was one of the only batsman who looked competent against Australian bowlers, with some of the best bowlers in the world. Meanwhile, many of your batsmen with great techniques couldn’t buy runs. Very typical of you guys trying to demoralize the young Yadi batsman. All young WI batsmen have some batting flaws and inconsistency. Shame on you guys!!

Forget the homeland bias NB It is also my homeland too. He was playing with better technique and assurance in Oz. Either lost form didn’t continue to work and or came back overconfident; got out early twice and lost that confidence. Bottom line he’s missing some basics. Proof? Practice match in Oz saw some lil boys bounce out he and Athanaze. They can fulfill promise and talent with hard work

Slipfeeler 2024-03-28 00:36:22

In reply to Brerzerk

It’s a phenomenon among some WI batsmen, very competent in international cricket but struggle when playing domestic cricket, not sure whether it’s overconfidence or lack of concentration when facing less experienced bowlers.
