ROWLEY, MIA, LLOYD SLAM CPL 50 YEAR GIVEAWAY
Emir

Recall- THE WICBC/CWI or wat-ever name they called themselves- gave away our cricket to the foreigners for a 50 year contract- many of us were flabbergasted.
PM Rowely is currently chairing a cricket conference- Lloyd, Mia and Rowley slammed this give away and they are going to pry open that contract.
Lloyd was also baffled by the “50-year” deal between CWI and CPL. And Shallow stated that he would have preferred more “favourable terms”.
Rowley opened the door for the discussions to follow, when he spoke about “one opportunity lost,” to have a larger share in the multi-billion-dollar cricket industry.
“There are opportunities and sometimes we lose those opportunities. One opportunity lost is to be in a position to ensure that (we are) in the multi-billion industry and the money-making part of the business,” said Rowley.
“On that comment, I want to say today that in the interest of West Indies cricket, and managing resources that are available to us, or should be available to us, it is absolutely essential to reopen the CPL contract and to look at the resources of West Indies cricket. That lop-sided contract must not stand,” he added.
FIX THAT DEAL

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has signed off a 20-year deal with Verus International to take charge of the Caribbean Premier League with an option to renew for another 30 years–leading to a possible 50-year association for the tournament.
According to a top board official: "The licence for the first part is for 20 years and then there is the option to renew this for another 30 years which makes it a possible 50-year association."
The WICB stands to gain US$1.5m per year from the owners of the tournament Verus International as licence fees. This money will be used to put more players across the region on retainer contracts.
The WICB's last stand with the regional T20 tournament was in January this year. T&T won that tournament and will be representing the West Indies at the Champions League tournament in September this year.
A total of 90 players will be contracted to play in the CPL. Each of the six franchise teams will be comprised of 15 players. All teams are required to have a minimum number of local players from their particular franchise country. At least four of them must be under the age of 23, and teams can also field a maximum of four international players. The remainder of the team must consist of regional and/or local players.
So far the organisers have contracted six regional T20 legends in Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine, Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels and Darren Sammy and they have been spread across the six teams.
In addition to them, they have so far contracted international players Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Mohammed Hafeez, Ross Taylor and Hershelle Gibbs. The main draft for tournament takes place on May 24.
Meanwhile, the CPL has signed global telecommunications company and long-term West Indies Cricket sponsor Digicel as a major sponsor of the tournament.
Digicel has been the main sponsor of West Indies Cricket since 2004. Since that time, the company has proven its worth as a marketing leader in the region–something the CPL appreciates will bring great value to the tournament. The sponsorship will be a multi-year deal and represents a significant investment from Digicel.

Caricom gvernments have failed in many things but they have been trying to lasso the wicb for the last 15 years, starting when gayle, bravo and co were banished from the WI in 2010 and 2011. the minister of sport from guyana said that the Skeritt and Swallow administrations have been the only two WI admins in the last 15 years where they haven't received static or outward hostility

I remember the guy buying CPL, claiming he was an investment banker in Bim, which was immediately refuted, he went on to pay $23 million for the CPL and then turned around and sold it before the ink was dry on the deal. Stanford spent more than that on that game with England. To date the buyers have violated several provisions of the purchase, why not void the contract?

Im not giving any credit to our politicians. If they want to unravel the CPL deal they should stop financing it. The holders would give it up in a hurry. Instead we compete amongst each other to host games. probably only the Jamaican admin has any moral authority to criticise this arrangement.

WI people never cease to amaze. There is a word for it. Imagine, Red ball loyalists, traditionalists, now expressing vexation and incredulity at the hand over of WICBC of "likkit", it's not cricket, to those who saw the true potential of t20 cricket.
The then administrators were subliminally accomplishing what many wanted: the prioritizing of red ball cricket in the region. Out with this imposter format of the game. NOW that it is realized how foolish it was to let "likkit" out of the hand of WI control, the offending administrators get the blame.
The CPL people should exercise their contractual rights.

You are wrong. Many many people in the region and in the vast diaspora, spoke up against it and lobbied heavily to have WICBC/CWI to open up the DRAFT contract for public feedback and review, BEFORE IT WAS SIGNED, they used the normal excuses to hide behind and refused.
You need to get your facts in order before you make those false claims.

From since it was announced what 12 13 years ago we knew and argued it was a terrible deal. I actually thought it was 20 or 30 years. And WI was getting 1 million a year from it. But that's jokeyand monkey money based on the amount of money the CPL brings in. Also, just take a look and see we haven't produced much players of note from when we had out own Caribbean T20. So there must be some sort of franchise system like thay again to really unearth the talents that's around the Caribbean and be a feeder system for the CPL and then on the senior team and other leagues. The deal needs to be squashed and done with and let something else take its place.

Under the terms of the current deal the CWI can't start another T20 league, even if it's to support finding talent for the CPL...

You remember the opinions of some of us back then ??
Hindsight for Caribbean leaders is Blindness.
They all gave away their countries' symbols, reducing their nations(even Republics) TO CLUB
STATUS and have the gall to savage the equally 'stupid' cricket folks.
They better be careful lest a LAWSUIT on the International scale crops up. Then it would
really be 'Crop Over'.

And none of us were against a franchise system, but we cautioned that any deal must be fair. Instead they turned the argument to us not wanting to modernize and embrace the new paradigm, so they give away our game for 50 years.
Then, they made it illegal to have any other T-20 league- even an under 19 league is illegal, then they made sure our governments have to pay for stadium, for security, and embrace their monopoly.
When Polly warned 4 years ago that we lack a feeder system or league for our young players or else our talent will be stifle, he was quickly shut down.
Question: What barriers to entry full fledge cell phone companies face if they want to enter our market as equal players?
You think the masses know these two things are connnected?
