sabbina 1994. spiteful wicket. lara was in rell prblems and then asked for some eye drops. He survived though and counterattacked, i think eventually falling to graeme hick of all people on 80 sumthin. i found an article on it, partially at least.

Another encounter with a West Indian great came when he met Brian Lara in 1994 at Sabina Park when Lara called for eye drops to solve the problem of Malcolm's pace.
"That was one of my best spells. Lara was in his prime but I knew he did not like it coming into his body. I tested him continuously and he almost gave in," Malcolm recalled.
"When I had my benefit a few years ago Michael Manley wrote an article and he said that was one of the finest spells he had seen. Also Fred Rumsey told me recently it was a fine spell. Getting such compliments from these men was an honour."

Malcolm was terribly underrated and treated worst that dog mess by england selectors. Steve Waugh said every time they looked at the team sheet and saw him not there, they'd be relieved and perplexed at the same time. he said the english always went for the consistent medium pace trundlers and never the match winners like malcolm. Ray Illingworth even tried to change his actionn on the 95 SA tour, a full year after he had terrorized them in taking 9-54. steve harmison suffered the same fate a decade or so later. to be honest though, he wasn't the only one. robin smith got some pretty awful treatment as well. i genuinely think malcolm was quicker than every paceman of the 90s, including allan donald and waqar younis. he had a weakness though. he was too nice.

telegraph's memories of the encounter
Lara shaped the first Test on England's last visit, when West Indies were wobbling at 23 for three in reply to England's 234. Lara, too, wobbled at first against Devon Malcolm, found something in his eye to blame, then whipped the game from England. In the second Test his 167 mastered the match again, and the series was to all intents decided. Only a statistician would rate his 375 in a dead match as a better innings.

It took you 25 years to find a reel, 3-4 balls that show a weak spot in Lara's batting.smile

ironically, for the supposed weakness in lara's batting, a myth unfortunately propagated by Michael holding, among others, I'm sure most people do not know that lara scored 700+ runs in the 1995 series in england vs devon malcolm and co, a tally that eclipsed the next highest run getter by more thanb 200 runs despite playing two innings less. I am absolutely positive neither tendulkar or kohli or any other subcontinental batsman has ever scored 700 runs in an english test series. a dude who scores 765 runs versus a bowler of malcolm's pace can't be judged to have a weakness against express pace. ,might be uncomfortable against short rising deliveries, but who is not? viv miscued a hook off malcolm in 1990, nearly got his head taken off by wasim akram in 1998, and got struck in the face by rodney hogg in 79/80 and he is by far the greatest player of express pace in the history of the sport

The wicket wasn't spiteful. It seemed strange administering eye drops but they said it was legitimate treatment for a real problem he had. he also went on to make a good score and had a great series.

That just shows how truly GREAT Brian Lara was. He stood up to the task and came out on top, as he did so many times throughout his illustrious career. Other players, some who would be labelled "great" would have chucked it in that day against express pace on a spiteful wicket. But not Lara. He saw the challenge and rose to the occasion.

I wrote somewhere on the forum recently about a comment Lara made during his career. It really stood out to me. He said something along the lines of "when the bowlers are on top and the pitch is doing plenty, I see it as an opportunity to take control"

That level of supreme confidence is rare. Coupled with his talent and dedication...wow, just wow...

it is always so funny when pple try to attack Lara as a batsman. As many bowlers found out during his career, that is almost impossible to do. Just check his average against his nemesis, McGrath

from my experience, its mostly, almost exclusively sachin fanatics who are still arguing the lara/tendulkar battle, more than a decade after both retired. three years from now will make it 20 years lara exited the stage. yo may find one or two english commentators(not fans) like scyld berry and mike atherton who are upset lara gave their sides such fearful beatings which is why they resorted to tiefing him out in the 2004 english summer. even the guardian and shocker of shockers, the daily telegraph complained bitterly over that quality of umpiring lara was subjected to

was the umpiring as bad as Australia in 2003 I believe where he could not catch a break until Adelaide where he made 188 and only got out because his spikes appeared to get stuck in the pitch when he was using his feet against a spinner? That was the worst series of umpiring decisions I had ever seen.

nah. i don't think ny umpiring was as bad as austraia in 2005/06. lara was given out wrongly in 4 out of 6 innings, 4 times in the first four innings of the series. when lara wasn't given out wrongly in the final test, dwayne smith, denesh ramdin and sarwan were given out wrongly in one innings. WICB in a rare moment of proactivity, sent an official complaint to the icc either after the second test or after the 3rd. dave richardson and the icc finally admitted that the umpiring was below even the international average for test series at that time

We take for granted how great Lara was! And some us do it in a cheeky way to needle each other for some stupid reason, but when you really think about it, Lara was one of one! There have been some real geniuses to grace the cricket field, but none as entertaining and electric as BCL. How many of you here can admit that the anticipation of watching Lara but was only surpassed by actually watching Lara bat? I'm pushing 40, and I've never got that feeling before or since. My mom came home one day and we had a different satellite dish lol because of BCL. I had saved up my money, pretended to be the home owner, switched out to dish network and ordered the season. At the time, I think it was a pretty penny-maybe like 400$ or something. I did get a rassing that day day, but it was well worth it.

only viv and sobers eclipse and draw with lara's shear entertainment value. Where lara eclipses every great batsman of his generation though is his ability to perform under pressure. nobody except steve waugh could handle pressure as well as lara.
