HEADLINE: CWI set to axe WI coach Pybus

CaribbeanCricket.com 2019-04-07 11:24:24

REPORTS have emerged suggesting Cricket West Indies (CWI) are initiating plans to remove current head coach, Richard Pybus, ahead of May’s 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.

According to ESPN, as per a conversation with new president Ricky Skerritt, the axe will fall on Pybus just three months after overseeing a Test series victory against England. Pybus’ contract was due to last until the end of India’s visit to the Caribbean in July in the wake of the World Cup, but the report indicates Skerritt will host a board meeting next week in order to review the current coaching structure.

“A cricket review process is underway,” Skerritt said. “Announcements will be made following our board meeting on Tuesday.” Pybus signed on controversially as head coach in January, plugging the gap left by Stuart Law who moved to Middlesex. It created a major division in the Caribbean, with questions about the transparency of this hiring emerging, and also if it was the right move to mend player relations as his policies led to fallout with several Twenty20 (T20) superstars in the past.

How is this good right before the world cup? We just won a series under pybus and we r playing good cricket. Let him do thw world cup then fire him. Simple

I guess this will clear the way for Marlon Samuels to return for the WC now. I was wondering how he was going to make it into the WC squad with "Richard Poison" as coach smile

brians_da_best 2019-04-07 12:14:22

This will be the most stupid decision ever.

We won a test series, drew an odi series against one of the top ranked teams in the world, many players, including the captain, praised Pybus and his work ethic, and now weeks before the world cup, we want to remove him.

Just doesn't make any sense.

Well lets say we keep him according to his original contract. Lets say we perform well in the World cup. Lets say we shock India. Then what happens after that?

Baje 2019-04-07 12:20:29

Since Simmons is not available right now..are they going to hire an interim or a permanent?

db 2019-04-07 12:36:57

Skerritt’s presidency would be ruined if the Board fires Pybus and the team performs poorly at the WC

brians_da_best 2019-04-07 12:38:30

In reply to Baje

Then we negotiate again with Pybus and get him on a permanent basis for 3 years, similar to what the top teams do.

Good coaches that yield results are a scarce commodity, Pybus so far, has ticked more boxes than he's missed, and should be persisted with

Walco 2019-04-07 12:43:23

In reply to db

That's a bit of a stretch boss. We barely qualified for this WC and we did not even win the WC qualifier. We are far from favorites or a "contender"

Seems like you forgot the cut-ass we got from England in the T20s after the same good coach Pybus advocated for keeping the ODI team together and got his wish

db 2019-04-07 12:49:17

In reply to Walco

The intervening event of the drawn ODI series against the outstanding Pommies gave us hope. That’s why poor performance under a new coach would be a problem for Skerritt

Baje 2019-04-07 12:58:19

Well Floyd is the new coach. So that is that.
Not sure how they could have ignored the the availability of Phil Simmons

Walco 2019-04-07 13:01:07

In reply to db

Well let's see how we do at the WC. But we showed improvement in ODIs before this last England series. I for one believe that Pybus got too much credit for the team's recent success. We always play England tough at home in tests, and we started getting 300+ scores in ODIs during the last India tour. I fully expect to see continued improvement during the WC but I do not think a WC semifinals is the the cards with or without Pybus. Hope I am wrong and we make the semis though.

Simmons is not available ... He is coaching Afghanistan

solidrock 2019-04-07 13:05:14

I am not sure why Pybus seems to be a person few people like as a cricket coach. Maybe someone can share why?

If he is to be removed, it is time to have someone who does not know how to lose at the international level and refuses to give in all of his cricket days. Someone like Jeffrey Dujon would be good in my eyes.

If Pybus is not your man then don't let let him coach a world cup. Interims do well and get get overlooked all the time. He is not being fired, he has fulfilled the duties given to him.

InHindsight 2019-04-07 15:36:08

My take on the whole discussion:

The manner of appointment of Pybus interim though it may be was outrageous.

Should he be removed now before the CWC? I am not so sure this is the right thing now. But then again I am speaking here as a disinterested party. Not one who was slighted in the entire event

I am speaking purely from a cricketing perspective.

Will the removal of Pybus say before the CWC be good for the Skerrit adminstration? I don't know.

For me it is a matter of having the right motives and ensuring proper communication whatever the case. And act in the best interest of cricket and cricketers foremost.

WICFan 2019-04-07 20:42:09

So, rewarding success is by getting sacked.

Pybus may have enemies and won't win a popularity contest, but he was to be an interim coach for the World Cup & India Series.

Why not let him complete his duties before bringing someone else in?

So is Reifer an interim coach keeping the seat warm for Simmons to return?

Baje 2019-04-07 21:01:47

In reply to Walco
Pybus already had a short term contract. There was no reason to terminate that contract at this time.
Makes me wonder how Skerrit got the 8th vote

Part of Skerritt's 10 point plan involved the hiring of local coaches.
So everyone (voters) knew that by electing him that was one of his mandates.

All political victories are a coalition of voters, no one faction is going to support all your position,at the end you have to make careful decisions as to what to pursue and what to ditch.

That could be Skerritt's plan. Reifer will get cuss like how some dumbos here cussed Otis Gibson.
