HEADLINE: Haynes: Cornwall not forgotten 2023-05-22 15:26:17

Rahkeem Cornwall is a contender for selection for selection in the West Indies team for the Test series against India later this year says The Most Honourable Desmond Haynes, the lead selector of the West Indies selection panel.

Cornwall, 30, played the last of his nine Test matches two years ago against Sri Lanka but the burly off-spinning all-rounder has continued to be an outstanding bowler in the regional Four-Day Championships.

This year Cornwall was the most successful bowler in the Championships bowling 212.2 overs and capturing 35 wickets at an average of 14.34.

“Cornwall bowled well in the Four-Day competition and even though he made himself unavailable for the Headley-Weekes tournament that does not stop him from being in line for selection during the Test series against India in the Caribbean later this year,” Haynes said during a virtual news conference earlier this week.

If there were real journalists in the Caribbean they would look into that highlighted part.

When a team is selected, long after we hear that some people were unavailable for selection.
Sounds silly to me.

Why would Cornwall make himself unavailable for selection???

Desmond Haynes says all the right things he knows people want to hear but does all the wrong things when it’s time to select the team. He said that years ago concerning Darren Bravo but to date not even the shadow of Bravo. Desmond Haynes is definitely the worse head selector we have had and definitely the most biased in our history. just imagine He has Raymond Riefer batting at number 3 for West Indies when he bats #7 or 8 for Barbados, at a time when we have Bravo, Arthanaze and many others available. By the way Riefer only has 1 century in his 92 first class games. As a former test opener does Desmond Haynes understand the embarrassment we have to face should one of our openers get hurt or get out after the first ball and Raymond Riefer has to come in? Shame on us!!!

PalsofMine 2023-05-22 17:04:45

this may be a silly question but is it the selectors who decide who bats in what position or is it the captain and coach?

I believe is captain and coach. However it is the sellectors giving you who they want and if for example Raymond Riefer who bats 8 for Barbados is the one selectors give you, you must bat him number because you don’t have an option

That’s a lot of bull

They are free to use who they want and at what position

Bravo is gone

My first guess would be a T20 circuit commitment. But I cannot answer your question. Transparency and CWI are strangers

my theory is Jimbo sees Weekes/Headley as a CWI thing (not a LI thing) and because of CWI's approach to his (non)selection, he decided to tell them go take a swim

was there not rumors about his selection / non-selection for Australia?

sometimes transparency gets in the way...see how long the list of requirements for head coach is / was and how fast it disappeared from their website?

Lemme guess.

Our player pool to small to ignore anybody confused

CWI has a long history of putting requirements in place and then ignoring them as a matter of convenience. Medical exemptions for Cornwall, Gayle and Rampaul come to mind. Now this practice has been extended to the head coaching position.

The CWI medical exemption policy was the beginning of this foolishness. How can you tell Hetmyer and others that they have to pass a fitness test and then turn around and give medical exemptions to other players?

It is for that reason that I don't care how many wickets Cornwall takes in domestic cricket, he must still pass the same fitness test that the others have to pass before playing for the West Indies. If you have a medical condition that prevents you from getting fit, stay off my team because I do not want to be sued if you drop dead on the field while playing for me.

I did not know that the list of requirements was removed from the CWI website. But it could not possible been at the behest of the new CWI president because I heard him on the Mason and Guest show expressing shock that anyone would even suggest that Sammy is not qualified to be West Indies white ball coach. For a so called PhD/Doctor, I find the new CWI President's reasoning to be rather superficial and Shallow ...

Y didn't he tell them to come take a plunge with me, instead?

That wh now and it’s not always about transparency. Sometime is plain stupidity

WI played a home ODI series against Ireland a few years ago

They played 2 matches and then there was a series shortly following the Ireland series

Evin Lewis scored 1 century and 90 odd against Ireland in the 2 match series, and was dropped for the upcoming series because “he failed a fitness test”

Message sent and firmly received.

Sporadic appearances for WI by Evin Lewis subsequently. Today he doesn’t get selected to play for them at all.

We get what we deserve
