Badree happy to fill the Narine void

ESPNcricinfo – Samuel Badree has already seen the best and worst of himself in West Indies’ first two matches in the World T20. In Mumbai, against England, he had the third-most expensive figures in his T20I career. In Bangalore, on Sunday, he silenced Sri Lanka with a three-wicket haul to record his second-best bowling figures in T20Is.
Despite finishing with figures of 4-0-12-3, Badree was pipped to the Man-of-the-Match award by Andre Fletcher who, playing his first match of the tournament, surprised Sri Lanka with a strokefull 84. Fletcher ensured West Indies did not feel the absence of Chris Gayle, who was forced to sit out in the dressing room as a precautionary measure, having suffered a mild hammy in his left leg.
Similarly, Badree has made certain that West Indies are secure despite the absence of their premier offspinner Sunil Narine, who opted out of the tournament to work further on his remodelled action. Narine has not played for West Indies since being banned last year during a tour of Sri Lanka.
“The absence of Sunil is a big blow to the team. You know how dangerous he is especially in these conditions. Yes, we have talked about someone having to step up the fill those huge shoes. I am happy thus far in the tournament I was able to do that quite competently,” Badree said in Nagpur, where West Indies will play South Africa on Friday in their third Super10 match.

TT AND WEST INDIES OFF-SPINNER PASSES ON

WICB Press Release: St. John’s, ANTIGUA - The Board of Director, Management and Staff of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) regret the passing of Trinidadian and West Indian off-spinner, Rangy Nanan.

Nanan was described as a quality off-spinner who served Trinidad and Tobago for almost two decades with distinction, leading them in the Shell Shield in the 1980s. He played in 94 first class matches where he racked up 366 wickets and scored 2,607 runs.

He played one Test for the West Indies in the 1980-81 year versus Pakistan where he took four wickets and scored 16 runs. His bowling figures for the match were 36-7-91-4. West Indies won that match by 156 runs.

After making his first class debut in 1973, he served the TT team as captain from 1984 – 1991. Following his retirement, he served as a police officer, a liaison officer for the West Indies team and was a volunteer for the Cricket World Cup 2007 in the Caribbean. The WICB offers condolences to his family and close friends.

Johnson proud to be in the company of Lloyd & Harper

At 28 Guyana Jaguars Captain Leon Rayon Johnson not only became the only Guyanese Skipper to win consecutive First-Class titles, but he led also from the front with bat with the most runs in the tournament from 10 matches, Johnson was the only batsman with 800 runs (807) he also made two centuries and five fifties at an average of 57.64 and hit the most sixes (19) and took the second most catches (17). But the crowning moment for Johnson, who has two fifties in four Tests, was seeing Gudakesh Motie at long-on, run to his left to catch Dennis Bullie off Veerasammy Permaul to give Guyana an innings and 54-run win against Jamaica and its eighth Regional First-Class title. No team has won more than eight matches in a single season and the victory against Jamaica was the eighth for the Jaguars. The Jaguars also won eight games last season. Jamaica is the only other team to win eight games in a season which they achieved in 2008 & 2012.

Gayle set for Proteas

West Indies opener Chris Gayle will resume his place at the top of the batting order in Friday’s third match against South Africa.

The celebrated West Indies batsman who blasted a 47-ball century in his team’s first match against England last Wednesday, was forced to watch from the pavillion as his team defeated Sri Lanka by seven wickets in its second match on Sunday.

The 40,000 strong crowd which showed up at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore to see Gayle was disappointed after the opener felt a twinge in his left hamstring and had to leave the field when Sri Lanka batted.

Gayle’s failure to open the innings when the West Indies batted was met with boos and jeers by the fans but his replacement Andre Fletcher blasted an unbeaten 84 to guide the West Indies to victory.
