HEADLINE: We will back Russell every time Pooran

West Indies stand-in captain Nicholas Pooran says the team will continue to stand behind Andre Russell, despite the Jamaican not being able to get the team over the line in the fourth Twenty20 (T20) International against Australia in St Lucia on Wednesday.
The West Indies needed 11 runs off the final over bowled by Mitchell Starc; however, Russell was only able to hit the final ball of the innings for six, which resulted in the home side losing by four runs, after they could only manage to get to 185 for six, chasing 190 for victory.
Russell, who was left not out on 24 from 13 balls, was chastised for not rotating the strike with Hayden Walsh Jr and taking the singles on offer in the early part of the over.
“The team thought that was the best decision,” Pooran said. “Andre batting six balls, we know that is two hits because he is a six-hitter. If he had hit two sixes, then everyone would say that is the best decision. We backed him 100 per cent and we believe that he did the right thing.”

In no universe was it a better idea to rotate strike in that over

You would have only rotated the strike if Pouty was at the other end

Test cricket enthusiasts would say you only need a single off each delivery.
And then if theyre able to recalculate
..come back later with
..
They only needed 2 runs off every delivery. Then issue the familiar indisciplined, brainless cricket refrain at the end of it all

Specially with how that second string bowler form OZ was pelting down near 160s.

I'd like to think Walsh would be aware that the guys known for tonking the ball are going to relish the chance to send a few across the ropes, and would be readying himself to run hard to turn singles into twos, etc., if the situation happens

I respectfully disagree with Pooran and co..West Indies will not win any major tournament with that kind of approach..

Nonsense....it was a dead rubber so that means you should trust the lower order to do something, can't depend on Russell, suppose Russell wasn't there for some reason then someone else need to step up. That's the reason why they rotate players so they all could get some experience as a team instead of depending on one player. Just last year Cottrel and a tailender needed 15 off the last over against bangladesh and they made it down to the very last ball winning the game.

You have convenient amnesia? You forget WI won 2 T20 World Cups using that identical approach?

Them wanted to win and felt Russell gave them their best chance. Hindsight is 20/20 vison.

Maybe Carlos would have had more success in that last over running singles.

Prior to that T20 World Cup in India, WI were berated by Kohli and media experts for playing brainless cricket and saying they couldnt win with that approach
We played India in the semi final at sold out Eden Gardens which holds approx 100k spectators.
India ram their singles hard and amassed a big total. Everyone thought India would win, especially when WI lost early wickets
Simmons and Russell launched a blitzkreig on dey ass and WI won comfortably. The massive crowd silent. All the critics saying it was fluke.
We know what happened next game.
Power hitting in T20 format is one of our strengths. The opposition knows they cannot match us in that department so they try to fuck with our heads. Fortunately
..it only affect some WI fans.
Play to our strengths. Well win more than we lose playing this format that way. Allyuh could call it what Allyuh want. What is guaranteed is that playing like India or Australia or anyone other than being true to who you are
.is going to result in failure. Guaranteed.

Start bowled an excellent last over. Kudos to him. The way people carrying on, you would think Australia won the series 4-1

The reaction to the way WI plays T20 cricket is similar to when Golden State started assaulting teams with the 3 pointer.
Establishment hated it. It wasnt basketball
Until it was pointed out to them that the math worked in their favor. 3 points will always be more than 2.
6 runs will always be more than a single

In reply to natty_forever Then they won't get the best from the team as a whole depending on one player even in a dead rubber.

Remember the name was brainless in the the last over against NZ and look at what happened to him.
Ok, Russell was up against Starc going at 160 clicks but a batsman at that level is supposed to use his brains all the time, not some of the time.
Pooran said what is expected in public. Enough said.

And being a dead rubber Russell decided to take matters into his hands, in preparation for such and eventuallity in the future.
