HEADLINE: BCA boss slams CWI over venue choices

CaribbeanCricket.com 2023-01-05 13:53:00

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC):

PRESIDENT OF the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) and Cricket West Indies (CWI) director, Conde Riley, has expressed disappointment that the island will not host any matches in the West Indies Championship for the second straight year despite being the home of the defending champions.

He suggested that the decision demonstrates a lack of vision.

Former opening Test batsman Philo Wallace went further, suggesting that Barbados was “being ostracised”.

Speaking on Mason and Guest radio show on Tuesday, Riley said it was “disappointing” that the country was not selected to host any games, specifically given that Barbados Pride are defending champions and the crowds that usually turn out for games.

Pressed by host Andrew Mason to say who lacked vision, the cricket administrator responded: “Whoever decides on where cricket is being played and the defending champions can’t have one game, two games, I leave it to them.”

Are they referring to franchise cricket? CWI has no say, those rights were sold.

Is Riley suggesting that it is well recognized fact that the only two considerations utilized for a decision to decide venues are who are the defending champions and who gets good crowds to games.

I would ask Mr. Riley the following questions

1.do you know the person or persons responsible for these decisions? (Rhetorical question)

2.Did you ask them the criteria used to come to these decisions?

3.Did you tell them that you think the only two criteria that should be utilized are those stated at the top of this post?

There is a 4th question that I might want to ask him but in the interest of civility I would not mention it!!!!!!!

I'll ask my first few questions and team up with you:

1. Is the cost of hosting this tournament a major criteriom in this decision making?

2. How does Barbados compare with the chosen venues, costwise, bearing in mind a seriously cash strapped CWI?

3. Was there any cost recovery or positive revenue considerations?

Could it be that Conde is right?

It is possible but highly unlikely..
He certainly did not articulate any good reasons as to why it would have been better for everyone if the tournament included Barbados as a venue. He also did not tell us the reasons why other venues were chosen. When one operates the way he did it heightens the suspicion that he is appealing to nativist thinking in his own country. If he had weighed the pros and cons of various places then one could see we have somebody who is a thoughtful person and who has the best interest of WI cricket at heart. His methodology suggests the opposite.

yuh have to luv de Colonel. how can you beat this reasoning

Riley did not accept the explanation by CWI Manager of Operations Roland Holder that challenges related to intra-regional travel was the main factor in the selection of venues.

“You don’t get from any part of the Caribbean without air transport,” he said.

“I don’t know if the guys are going to swim to those other places or travel by boat, but I know that if you want to get to Barbados, the same way that you get to Antigua or Grenada or St Vincent, you get to Barbados. We have thousands of people from all over the world in Barbados as we speak.”

However, Riley said the BCA has not raised any objections to CWI about Barbados’ omission from the chosen venues and had no intention of doing so.

“It makes no sense,” he asserted.

“If they say the problem is travel, how do they get down to these other islands but not to Barbados?”

The fact that Roland Holder was also poor in explaining the decision making process does not absolve Riley from his utterances.

I would also like to be educated about accomodation costs for the tournament before making any other comment...bearing in mind "decision making is not always about technical considerations but can purely be political."

I would not dimiss Conde without knowing all the facts on the table.

Conde and by extension Barbados, may very be the victims of ostracization as a result of badmindedness by CWI...

We don't have all the facts.

As a president of an association, this would not sit well with me.

A sad thing....from Germany to China everyone taking up cricket on a big scale and WI downsizing and cash strapped....they need to look at USA for financial assistance.

camos 2023-01-05 22:55:31

In reply to openning As a member of CWI it is highly inappropriate to make a public statement like that, if he is doing any work in the organization he should have known of the decision before it became public and get his chance then to discuss. I am sure there are directors who are not satisfied with every England team going to Barbados, but no one goes home to complain.

This English tours will most likely have matches in Barbados and Antigua, just like India matches in Guyana and T&T.
Regional matches are somewhat different, usually Home and away tournaments.
Is there not a bidding process for international matches?

I am aware, I listened to the program, he mention England tour, stating that Barbados was one of the Island able to host such a large group of tourist.
Of course he stated, he did not went to school in August, not once by two times.

Sylobaby 2023-01-06 01:39:39

In my opinion what makes the NBA, Super Bowl, MLB, cricket World Cup or football World Cup exciting is the fact that the final is not based on who is the defending champion. Mr Riley needs to understand that beating your opponent on the road is far more exciting than winning at home. So they should concentrate on winning on the road again and organize a national motorcade to welcome his winning team home

Can you name a team in the NBA, NHL, NFL, Surrey, Ken, Mumbai, NSW, that don't have home matches?
Conde is not speaking about the final matches, the Pride will be playing 4-games, none of them at home.

tc1 2023-01-06 02:21:02

I loved Condi, he sa he did guh school in August. Some went to school at the pipe.

WICFan 2023-01-06 10:00:59

If regional cricket isn't going to be played in Barbados etc. cricket in the Caribbean is really on it's knees.

What's the point of pitch curators? How are regional players going to get accustomed to playing in various venues that are often different like Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica?

Even in a truncated competition, each side should be playing games at home.

They should have included The Academy side and had 6 fixtures. 3 at home, 3 away.

velo 2023-01-06 22:10:43

this was clearly a slap in the face of the defending champions conde and the current wicb management don't like each other they should put that shit aside and concentrate on cricket matters

rillo 2023-01-07 03:57:20

Is it cost or player exposure to different venues and pitches?
Why play at Diego Martin?
CWI digging deeper and deeper. Soon they will come out in China.

If the future is hosting Regional Tournaments in a couple of territories to cut costs then it needs to be as fair and even as possible.
