As if the nauseating display of the West Indies team in our last two matches is not enough,I find myself shaking my head in disbelief at the response by the fans of WI cricket on this board.
Cricket is an emotional game for Caribbean people but nevertheless if you set aside common sense and operate on raw emotion you will inevitably fail at what you are trying to accomplish.
Fans are trying to accomplish answers to the vexing question as to what ails WI cricket. However, they make no attempt to any serious analysis and invest zero brain power into assessing what has gone wrong and continues to go wrong for the past 20 odd years.
It is not as if we have not been told what needs to be done to start the process. The GOVERNANCE structure of CWI results in the CWI Presidency being held hostage by the 12 Directors who have ZERO accountability for the stewardship of WI cricket.Unless and until that changes one can not reasonably expect any improvement in our fortunes.
The appointments of key staff members is based on the perpetuation of power by those doing the appointments so there is no meritocracy involved in these decisions. To give an example if a Director of CWI wants a particular person to be COS and if he controls a sizable amount of votes, he could strong arm those in control of the appointment to ensure that his person is made COS.The complete lack of transparency in ALL appointments and the clear ignoring of conflicts of interest is rampant in all the appointments, hence the continued failure of the people in these positions.
We lack people of impeccable integrity who are willing to do the right thing regardless of what the behind the scenes power brokers want and are willing to publicly state all the shenanigans going on behind the scenes in team selections and other matters because "everybody trying to eat a food". We need people who are not dependent on CWI to eke out the kind of lifestyle they want to eke out.
We need fearless journalists who will hold CWI ACCOUNTABLE though that is a forlorn hope.
Finally we need fans who with careful analysis will write to newspapers, get on talk shows and also on Television in the Caribbean and bring thoughtful analysis to the fore.
Sadly none of the above is likely to take place and as long as we are stuck in this morass we will continue to be bottom feeders.

The Death of West Indies cricket excellence
All West Indians including yours wield power in this colonial way

There are no disincentives for the maintaining the status qu in West Indies cricket. The powers that be get away with the excuse that "CWI is a private entity."
Most of your thread however have been articulated in the various reports sitting on the shelves.
Caricom attempted to reverse the course but the common refrain here and with some in the media was "Caricom was equally ineffective."
And yes...we are doomed cricketwise.
In reply to Courtesy
Doomed is correct. We all know the problems but who will bell the cat? And who are these people of integrity that Duke talks about? And as Point has said one million times, there are no real sports journalists in the Caribbean. They are all either insular or soup drinkers.
In reply to Dukes
It baffles me that our cricketers were world beaters when they played adjunctly. Now these career jokers can't even beat cellar dwellers.

I would like to see the esteemed Prime Minister Mia Mottley be the catalyst on this issue.
Bottomline.....WI cricket cannot be OWNED by a private company....that is NONESENSE.
Legal brains must get together and make solid representation to the ICC and have the CWI / ICC arrangement nullified.
Last resort....each territory go it alone.
First thing first. Where is CWI registered as a Private Company? That country needs to de-register CWI so that it no longer exists as a legal entity and while this is being done a CARICOM established committee must be having discussions with the ICC, who themselves cannot be happy with the state of the once powerful and popular West Indies team.
T&T PM Rowley on yesterday's game
In reply to Narper
nail on the head. they need to find some way to fix this. CARICOM needs to consult a QC to see if there is some way the CWI can be made accountable to the states. All the territorial boards rely on government subventions....hold them accountable. start there
ICC is a private company....all it's members have to be private company...no government intervention.... all directors of boards should be elected freely and in democratic manner...Zimbabwe was penalized for Government intervention...

Zimbabwe were suspended from the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday, with the world governing body saying the countrys cricket administration was not free from government interference.
The ICC Board unanimously decided to freeze funding to national governing body Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) and ban the southern African countrys teams from international events.
RIP WORSTINDIES CRICKET. NOW I CAN BE HAPPY FOREVA. WORSTINDIES DONE AND DUSTED.

i guess that is why the BCCI was under a government appointed overseeing committee when it was found that n srinivasan and co had a whole lot of skeletons in their closet. Also, the Pakistani government appoints the PCB chairman. So too does the sri lankan government. You can't have no oversight when you are operating in a country run by a government....unless its somalia you're in

Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage said an election would be held in January for the Sri Lanka Cricket Board which, for the past seven years, has been appointed by the government.
"We will abide by ICC rules," Aluthgamage said.
The governing body, holding its annual meeting in Hong Kong, announced a ban on countries making political appointments to national boards, vowing to free the sport from undue government influence.
As well as Sri Lanka, the reform, which allows the ICC to suspend a member country for non-compliance, will impact Pakistan and Bangladesh.

South Africa also....
let me say this right now.
there is nothing wrong with CWI being a private entity, absolutely nothing wrong.
many territorial govts have state owned entities doing govt work and were encouraged to do so becos citizens complained that the various Civil Services werent functioning properly
it depends on how CWI's articles of association says it is to be operated, its responsibilities and to whom it reports or is accountable and any by laws that address these issues and whether it can be amended to have a Caricom representative as a director with at least a 49% voting right.
but knowing how our govts operate and how effective Caricom has been i do not advocate CWI being totally accountable to Caricom.
that is not to say i dont agree that there should be better governance of our cricket by CWI as it is presently represented
In reply to sudden
Anyone who knows how our governments operate and who knows about the ineffectiveness of CARICOM, would not advocate for their greater involvement.
Besides, the governments have some degree of influence over the national boards. These boards should be the ones nurturing the game in their respective territories. How has government influence worked? Are these boards operating effectively? Are they transparent?

I think CWI is registered in BVI, that should be a no no, it should be registered in a member country, if you want to avoid taxes, do so as a non profit, or utilize some pass-through arrangement.

Bro, you made Sudden day by mentioning Combermere and up and on.
BTW, Bolls is a run away Bajan, wanting to live in a cave, it is good to see him enjoying the modern lifestyle again.
In reply to openning
up and on, brother.
and yes Bolls was Catsanus etc.
aka John Knox
In reply to openning
I believe BOILS is of Caribbean descent, he knows the BCA youth players very well and has followed the achievements of Grant and Morris since their u13 tour to England.
In reply to sudden
What the name of the Bajan/Aussie who wanted to live in a bunker?
Whenever Roland Holder is on the Mason and guest show, he greet Andrew the doctor with Up and on.
In reply to tc1
I mistake him for the Bajan, who live in Australia, he was also not a fan of the West Indies.
King Dyall was not the only fan that disliked the West Indies, I had two cousins, both brothers that hated every thing about West Indies cricket.
In reply to openning
dont know the name of the Bajan / Ozzie but i know John Knox has plenty of handles on the MB including Bolls, KTom which i suspect is a play on the term 'Uncle Tom', and possibly Castled
yes 'up and on' is how we of the Cawmere Mafia greet each other.
In reply to sudden
he knows the u13, 17 and 19 Bajan players well.
In reply to Dukes
Am not sure if our decline as anything to do with the pitches in caribbean due to the fact that our players do well at home and abroad looks mediocre

We are mental dwarves in the cricket stratosphere.
9 out of 10 times teams will beat us because they are mentally superior in execution of a winning strategy.
The skill set is there. It has always been there and will always be there. The great West Indies teams of the past beat teams because they were superior in all alspects of the game. We bulldozed teams. Mental prep was not so important. Now all the teams are technically superior and mentally prepared to fight to the death. We are not.
In reply to Dukes
The problems are myriad, and poor governance structure is just one of them.
The concept of the West Indies is an outdated one, a colonial structure which declined in importance once the Federation died, and the island nations went their separate ways. Yes, the Clive Lloyd-Viv Richards era saw pride in the West Indies continuing into the 1990s, but fans started to dwindle away to the point that many Caribbean people no longer follow the West Indies.
The rise of T20 cricket, like it or not. Many young cricket fans are more interested in how their national teams will perform in the CPL, than in the performance of the West Indies.
The cricket player and the cricket fan is fast becoming a rare breed. When I went to the traditional high school of Jamaica College, alongside Jimmy Adams, in those days JC produced several teams - a Sunlight Cup team, a Colts team, etc. Now, JC is struggling to find 11 players from the entire school to field one cricket team.
There was a time when schoolboys would take pride in who won the Sunlight Cup or the Headley Cup. Now, many schoolboys show indifference towards those competitions. The three schoolboy titles that are most coveted now are football (Manning Cup, daCosta Cup), track and field (Champs) and Schools Challenge (quiz). The first two always were always top billing, but Schools Challenge has now taken over the prestige that once used to be cricket's pride of place when I went to school.
Success of track and field athletics. Between 1976 and 1996, Jamaica didn't win a single gold medal at the Olympics. From 1996 onwards, Jamaica has reaped a lot of success in track and field athletics, and other Caribbean countries are starting to produce track winners too. These sports are generating more grass roots support, and more fan support, than cricket. The public and private administrators of track and field athletics seem to be doing a better job of developing the sport, and connecting with the public.
The appeal of other sports. In the past, there was practically no coverage of other sporting events. When I was at school, the only televised football match was the FA Cup final. Now, you can get football coverage all season, and the same with the NBA. Many young sports fans would rather watch European football or American basketball than Caribbean cricket.
The CWI has its head in the sand. They have no vision, and are happy to trudge along, with their snouts in the trough, while Caribbean cricket continues to decline. The wounds are fatal. West Indies cricket will not recover. It's dying. We're just waiting for the doctor to pull the plug, and put it out of it's misery.
It was good while it lasted, but those days are gone forever.
