Andre Coley says that while he is disappointed he wasn’t given a longer run as head coach of the West Indies Test team, he accepts that recent unfavourable results blighted his chances.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced on Monday that Coley’s tenure, which began in 2023, is to end with the two-Test tour of Pakistan in January 2025, months before his contract is set to expire in June.

Daren Sammy, the West Indies white-ball head coach and former two-time Twenty20 (T20) World Cup-winning captain, is to take over the red-ball team ahead of the three-Test home series against Australia in mid 2025.

The West Indies Test team — ranked eighth in the world — has been without many of the Caribbean’s more talented players in recent years, predominantly because they have opted to compete in lucrative T20 and T10 franchise leagues.

“I would have wanted to continue in the role but I’ll do whatever I need to do to get the boys motivated and ready for Pakistan,” Coley told the Jamaica Observer on Thursday, his first public comment on the impending coaching change.

“At this level it’s solely [about] performance; if coaches don’t do well it’s ultimately the coaches who are responsible.

Well, Coley was given a weakened team to work with, I would not be surprised if Sammy is able to persuade some of the better players to try playing Test cricket again. The WI is the only team in the top 9 that has very few players from the Test team that represent the WI in the shorter formats

I guess Sammy might try to persuade Chase, Rutherford, Hope and King to try Test cricket.

Chase, Rutherford, Hope and King

Hope and King have in principle agreed to play in all formats ....by signing all formats multi-years contract..

Chase has been dropped after previous tour of Australia.

Rutherford, never selected, never refused...

Be that as it may, needs good backroom staffs... technological sound.... good bowling and batting coach...

No one man can do this. The fact that winning a Windies cap isn’t a dream for the average child living in that region. West Indies is a concept a brand just like Batman or Superman. It needs re marketing just like those two iconic figures I just mentioned, every ten yrs a movie comes out on them to introduce them to a new generation.
We old folks are stuck playing the same old tunes, these youngsters don’t see what we see and Windies is not a country you feel you’re letting down or may feel naturally to shed blood for… We need to understand this and deal with the real problem.
Didn’t Courtney Walsh and Michael Holding take to social media begging the people on the island to support the team at Sabina Park and how many turn up? An Island of 3 million plus for a stadium of 15,000. Do the maths. It’s a problem deeply rooted, a solution isn’t gonna be easy.

Chase is his own worst enemy. Does not know his role when batting.

Academies with the best coaches would help a lot.
