They called it free trade and globalization.
This ideology has its origins under Thatcher and Reagan. In the 1980's China resisted for almost two decades before they joined the club- From GATT to WTO.
One big exception- Western Europe and the USA never in their wildest imagination could have imagined that China would have learn so quickly to beat them at their own game- thus the so called West trade conflict with the US in particular.
All the rest of the third world are reeling form this liberalization, save for a few big economies like Brazil and India with her large domestic market.
Banana's in Trinidad is now imported, all over our region even inferior commercially manufactured American Ice cream is abundant.

Tourism Minister, Edmund Bartlett, noted that Jamaica’s tourism story is one of “remarkable resilience and triumph.”

What I find amazing in this story is the price of $1065 per bag, that US$7.19, last fall I went to Boston for a soccer game, bought ice for the after party, paid$3.90 for a bag and felt ripped off then.

All this has been orchestrated ,especially by America. They hardly want countries
to cultivate their own as they cater tom the American farmers to supply those
countries and Jamaica is top of the list in the Region.
A decade ago when I heard Jamaica importing so much red peas and potatoes ,I
knew we were on the wrong track especially as the AI soil in places like St. Catherine
are being turned into 'Cities and extra Parish on the plains and subsistence farming
by small growers are being shunted to the hills where they have to pump water to
carry on that activity...and the stupid people are enjoying it all.

I have no empathy for no one in Jamaica ... People need to wake up.
And the worst is yet to come.
