Here's what I learned - this is about prestige more than anything else - the sports titles bring in the money from alumni who fund labs complete with technology, gear, infrastructure, networks at home and abroad and sporting fields, etc.
It is about way more than the medals.

One on the long jumpers probably broke his leg. I think the sand might have been too hard after the rain. It did not give. Unfortunate . They are breaking the sand up now.
