Understanding the WIPA $20M lawsuit

WIPA in its legal action, filed on August 16th in the Trinidad and Tobago High Court is claiming U$20,000,000 in damages for WIPA itself and players, principally Chris Gayle. The case is based on the Restraint of Trade principle with WIPA claiming that players, Chris Gayle in particular, were restrained from playing cricket by the WICB because the WICB did not issue those players with unconditional No Objection Certificates (NOC).

WICB issues statement on GCB situation

In response to news that Guyana's president Bharrat Jagdeo has held meetings with officials from the Guyana Cricket Board concerning GCB election, the West Indies Cricket board has issued a statement that reads as follows:

The WICB has noted media reports in Guyana relating to the Guyana Cricket Board. It has also been informed of a meeting called by President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo and which involved Minister of Sports Dr. Frank Anthony, GCB officials and other stakeholders.

Dr. Anthony contacted WICB President Dr. Julian Hunte and CEO Dr. Ernest Hilaire and the WICB has requested written communication relating to the purported plans of the Government of Guyana as it relates to cricket in Guyana. The WICB awaits Dr. Anthony’s response.

The WICB release of Tuesday August 9,2011 was one that really aimed to mislead the public rather than provide the real facts that characterize the nature of the relationship between the WICB and WIPA. The WICB ought to remember that the West Indian cricket fan is an intelligent being that is able to critically analyze the issues surrounding West Indies cricket.
