Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel (183-5) beat Jamaica Tallawahs (170-6) by 13 runs

Saturday 26th July 2014 – Port of Spain, Trinidad. The Jamaica Tallawahs lost their 100% record as victory for Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel saw them go top of the Limacol Caribbean Premier League table. An excellent half century from Tallawahs’ captain, Chris Gayle, was not enough to prevent his side suffering their first defeat of this year’s event. Some superb hitting from 22 year old Evin Lewis and a career best bowling performance from Kevin O’Brien set up an excellent victory for the home side.

A flying start for the Red Steel was checked by two wickets off the last over of the Powerplay. Andre Russell yorked a well set O’Brien who was looking very dangerous. After a bumper first ball that was called a wide, Ross Taylor mistimed a drive from a slower ball to Rusty Theron at mid off who caught the ball one handed as the New Zealander fell for his second duck in as many innings.


Guyana Amazon Warriors (173-5) beat Barbados Tridents (166-4) by 7 runs

In front of a packed and vibrant crowd, a brilliant hundred from Dwayne Smith was not enough to secure victory for the Barbados Tridents as they lost to the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the Limacol Caribbean Premier League. A fantastic spell of death bowling from Ronsford Beaton set up the win for the visitors when it looked as though all hope was lost, with Smith combining with Shoaib Malik in the biggest partnership of this year’s tournament.

A fantastic opening stand between Lendl Simmons and Martin Guptill got the visitors off to a brilliant start. Simmons was timing the ball superbly from the very start of his innings as he hit four sixes, two of which cleared the roof of the Kensington Oval stands. When he fell, he had made 64 off 40 balls, and while he was at the crease, it looked like the Amazon Warriors were going to set a massive total. When he lost his wicket, his side had already reached triple figures in the twelfth over.

Tridents squeak by to keep Hawksbills winless

Antigua Hawksbills' luckless 2014 Caribbean Premier League campaign continued with a one-wicket defeat at the hands of Barbados Tridents Friday night at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. Akeal Hosein shook off a kamikaze run-out - which consumed his partner Rayad Emrit, the ninth Tridents wicket - on the third ball of the final over by calmly flicking a two through midwicket with the field spread to scamper to a win with two balls to spare.

The loss keeps Hawksbills winless from five games and only a dramatic turnaround in their final four games will give them a chance at advancing into the CPL playoffs. The Tridents win ensures they keep pace at the top of the CPL table with Tallawahs, Red Steel and Amazon Warriors as all four teams currently sit level on six points.

Darren Bravo seals last-ball win for Red Steel

At 13 for 3 in the fourth over, chasing 180, the chances of a Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel win were looking unlikely. It took an impressive 131-run, fourth-wicket partnership between Darren and Dwayne Bravo and a last-ball six from Darren to help Red Steel seal off a remarkable win against Guyana Amazon Warriors.

With 167 needed at the start of the fifth over and the required run rate already over 10, Red Steel did not have the luxury of playing out a few overs to consolidate. The Bravo brothers, however, paced themselves well, finding the boundary in nearly every over

Best, Malik fined for spat

St Lucia Zouks’ Tino Best and Barbados tridents Shoaib Malik were both fined for their on-field altercation during Wednesday’s Limacol Caribbean Premier League match at the Kensington Oval.

Umpires Joel Wilson and Gregory Brathwaite laid the charges, citing the WICB Code of Conduct,  the governing code for the CPL.

They judged that Best breached Article 2.1.8 of the Code of Conduct which relates to “conduct that either (a) is contrary to the spirit of the game; or (b) brings the game into disrepute.”

 This is a level one offence and  Best was charged 10 per cent of his match fee.
