ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Recently-appointed captains Jason Holder and Stafanie Taylor have been given the assurance that the West Indies Cricket Board is prepared to offer them professional support services, as they approach the leadership roles in their respective teams.
The offer was made when WICB director of cricket Richard Pybus wrote the two captains following their recent appointments.
“The directors and the management of the WICB recognised that being captain of a West Indies team is a unique challenge and carries an enormous burden of responsibility,” said Pybus.
“We have written and offered them access to whatever support systems they believe is necessary for them to handle their responsibilities in a purposeful manner.”
Holder, the current One-day International captain, had the responsibility of Test captain added to his portfolio, as the team prepares for next month’s Tour of Sri Lanka, where the side will play two Tests, three One-day Internationals and two Twenty20 Internationals.
Taylor, a former ICC Player-of-the-Year, was elevated to captain of the West Indies Women’s team ahead of their International Home Series against Pakistan Women also taking place next month, when they will play four ODIs in St. Lucia and three Twenty20 Internationals in Grenada.
Pybus said Holder has already been benefitting from mentoring from Convenor of Selectors, Clive Lloyd.
“As a legend of the game, a successful international captain and in the role of Convenor of Selectors, Clive is uniquely placed to give valuable insight and we have encouraged Jason to lean on his wisdom, so he can manage the transition to the leadership position,” said Pybus.
Lloyd was a legendary captain that led the West Indies Men in 74 Tests and 84 One-day Internationals during a period of unmatched dominance in the game between 1974 and 1985.
“Clive is also available to Stafanie, but we will also work with her to identify a suitable mentor going forward,” said Pybus.
The WICB has also offered both captains the opportunity to employ an executive coach to assist them with their personal development.
LONDON, England (CMC) — West Indies speedster Shannon Gabriel warmed up for the tour of Sri Lanka next month with a splendid five-wicket haul for Worcestershire, while discarded fast bowler Fidel Edwards produced a season-best six-wicket performance for Hampshire, in the English County Championship on Tuesday.
The 27-year-old Gabriel, playing in the final game of a two-match contract, finished with five for 35 as the home side, opting to bowl first, routed Middlesex for a paltry 98 on the opening day at New Road.
At the close, Worcestershire were in strong reply at 79 for one.
Right-armer Gabriel, a member of the 15-man squad which will play two Tests in Sri Lanka next month, bowled with pace and hostility on a helpful surface to unsettle the visitors.

Admission for the event – jointly hosted by the WICB and UWI – is US$10 for adults and US$5 for children under the age of 12, with all proceeds going directly to the Dominica Government to assist with recovery efforts in the island which suffered severe damage to property and loss of life from the passage of Tropical Storm Erika, and continued to be affected by heavy rainfall in the recent days.

Mystery spinner Sunil Narine has been selected on the West Indies team for the limited overs segment of their upcoming tour to Sri Lanka.
This is welcome news for the West Indies, as Narine last represented the region back at the World T20 in Bangladesh last year. He was then no-balled for an alleged illegal bowling action during the Champions Trophy in India and since then has been out of action at the international level while working on fine tuning his action.
During the period of exile from international cricket, the Queen’s Park player has been actively involved in ODI cricket for the Red Force and T20 cricket for the Guyana Amazon Warriors.
Also making a return to the West Indies ODI outfit is fast bowler Ravi Rampaul, who has been putting in the hard work at the National Cricket Centre (NCC) in Trinidad with the T&T Red Force team.

The icon, who retired from international cricket 15 years ago with 405 Test wickets and 225 in One-Day Internationals, announced his availability for the “Rally Round Dominica” charity match this Saturday.
