Zimbabwe stayed ahead of the West Indies after day two of the second cricket Test at Queens Sports Club yesterday with their depleted bowling attack having a lot of work to do in order to maintain the advantage. Hamilton Masakadza top scored with 147 runs, his highest score in Test cricket, while Sikandar Raza was second best with 80 for Zimbabwe’s first innings of 326 in 109.1 overs.
At stumps, West Indies had progressed to a painstaking 78 for one in 49 overs, having lost the wicket of Kraigg Brathwaite. Debutant, Tendai Chisoro, who has a huge role to play with his left arm spin if Zimbabwe are to bowl out West Indies today, feels that if they can take can strike early this morning, then they stand a chance of winning the Test and level the series.

SYDNEY, Australia (CMC) — A Sydney court yesterday ruled in favour of West Indies star Chris Gayle in a widely publicised defamation case involving leading Australia media company, Fairfax Media.
Following the six-day trial, a four-member jury comprising one man and three women concluded in less than two hours that Fairfax Media had failed to prove that a series of articles it published about Gayle last year were true.
The court will decide on damages today.

ST JOHN’S, Antigua - The following is a statement in response to an article carried by Barbados Today which was entitled “High Performance Academy launched”.
The article stated that according to Beckles, “the University has always maintained that the relationship had to be inclusive of University of West Indies (UWI) and Cricket West Indies (CWI) and efforts to persuade Cameron to re-enter the tripartite arrangement have proved futile.”
“West Indies Cricket Board chose to withdraw from the partnership. We have brokered a tripartite arrangement, UWI, Sagicor, WICB, a tripartite arrangement that gave us the academy that has produced all of these young cricketers. All of these young men who are doing so well, fighting for West Indies, came through the academy.
“I tried to persuade CWI and Mr. Cameron to come back into the tripartite arrangement and they [CWI] have opted not to because they have another approach. We at the University believe in the effectiveness of our research, we believe in the effectiveness of our model. It has been proven that the youngsters who are now fighting for West Indies’ future are products of that mental construct. We have confidence in them and we believe that when they return home, they should return home to an academy,” he said.
CWI’S POSITION
To clarify, CWI, in partnership with UWI, ran a High-Performance Center (HPC) at the Cave Hill Campus in Barbados between 2010 and 2016. The HPC was sponsored by Sagicor for a 4-year period, but their contract was unfortunately not renewed. CWI is very grateful to Sagicor for their support over the years and confirms that it would encourage a tripartite relationship and is open to dialogue on the same.
CWI is currently working on a new strategic plan for 2018-2023, and has already held formal discussions with UWI on developing a comprehensive partnership across many different areas of the University.
CWI continues to fund the development of the Combined Campuses and Colleges Marooners cricket team and is looking forward to their participation in the Super50 tournament this season.
CWI is committed to developing world-class cricketers and is confident that a new long-term agreement with UWI will be finalised in 2018.

Jaguars vs Scorpions
AN inexplicable batting collapse left the Jamaica Scorpions staring down the barrel, as left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul six-wicket haul gave the Guyana Jaguars a firm grip after day two yesterday.
The two sides are contesting the first round of Cricket West Indies (CWI) Professional Cricket League (PCL) four-day game at the National Stadium, Providence.
The tourists lost seven first innings wickets for just 23 runs to be bowled out for a pathetic 99, handing the momentum to the Guyanese, who closed the second day on 106-4, batting a second time.
With a 67-run cushion, the three-time defending champions pressed home the advantage by finishing the day with an overall lead of 273 runs. At stumps Leon Johnson is on 11 while Bhaskar Yadram is yet to score.
Redforce vs Pride
A gritty hundred by skipper Denesh Ramdin and half centuries by Jeremy Solozano (54) and Ewart Nicholson (74) helped put the Redforce into a strong first innings position in their Windies Professional Cricket League 4 Day fixture against Barbados at Kensington Oval.
At the tea interval of their Day/Night encounter last night the Redforce was 297 for 8, doing well to build a decent score after losing almost the entire first day to rain as only four balls were bowled.
T&T was asked to bat by the hosts and saw openers Solozano and Amir Jangoo share in a 62-run first wicket partnership before Jangoo was out on 26. Isiah Rajah was dismissed for a first ball duck before Solozano and Nicholson came together for a 38-run third wicket stand. Solozano eventually departed for 54 from 50 deliveries with the Redforce on 100 for the loss of three wickets.
Hurricanes vs Volcanoes
Half-centuries from openers Chesney Hughes and Keacy Carty laid the foundation for Leeward Islands Hurricanes to get within touching distance of a lead over Windward Islands Volcanoes in the Regional 4-Day Championship yesterday.
Hughes made 89 and Carty stroked 72 before the Volcanoes hit back to restrict the Hurricanes to 231 for four in their first innings at the close - trailing by just two runs - on the second day of the first round match at the National Cricket Stadium.
Hughes, the big left-handed Anguillan with a number of years' experience in the English County Championship, struck three fours and five sixes from 179 balls in close to four hours of batting.
Carty, a tall, elegant right-hander from St. Maarten, whose half-century sealed the 2016 ICC Youth World Cup for Windies Under-19, collected six fours and one six from 148 balls in just under three hours at the crease.

ST JOHN’S, Antigua, Cricket West Indies congratulates the Windies Women players who have been included in the latest ICC ODI and T20I player rankings.
Hayley Matthews leads the T20I bowling and all-rounder categories with 631 and 288 points respectively. Stafanie Taylor with 286 and Deandra Dottin 278 points respectively, round out the top three in the all-rounder category. Anisa Mohammed was fourth in the bowling rankings with 608 points.
Skipper Taylor topped the T20I batting rankings with 678 points, while Dottin was fourth with 622 points. Taylor was once again featured in the ODI rankings. She is fourth in bowling with 626 points and second in the all-rounder category with 377 points.
The Windies Women just completed a clean sweep against Sri Lanka with series wins in the ODIs and T20Is at home. Next on the agenda for the Women will a tour of New Zealand next March. Both teams will do battle in three ODIs and five T20Is.
