LEEDS, England (CMC) – Two noted legends of English cricket have hailed the West Indies’ stunning second Test win over England at Headingley as one of the finest sporting triumphs in recent memory. Ian Botham, arguably England’s greatest cricketer of all-time, and Michael Atherton, one of their most capped players and captains, showered praise on Jason Holder’s team after their fearless and fascinating triumph at the historic ground on Tuesday.Chasing 322 for victory on the final day, West Indies pulled off a remarkable five-wicket win, 11 days following a humiliating innings defeat inside three days in the first Test at Edgbaston. Writing in The Times newspaper yesterday, Atherton said most observers expected a shellacking but the Windies changed the narrative and performed “a resurrection … of a once-proud cricketing nation fallen on hard times.”“This was one of the great modern Test matches, one that produced a truly astonishing result,” Atherton wrote.
A superb spell of fast bowling by 20-year-old Oshane Thomas led the Jamaica Tallawahs to a 41-run win over the Chris Gayle-led St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the 2017 Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) at Sabina Park in Kingston Wednesday night.
Thomas dismissed key batsmen Chris Gayle, Carlos Brathwaite and Mohammad Nabi in four hostile overs that ensured the Tallawahs defended 158 and guarantee their qualification for the Play Off stage.
The Patriots' run-chase got off to the worst possible start when Gayle was trapped lbw for a three-ball duck offering no shot to an in-swinger from Thomas who bowled a fiery opening over.
Evin Lewis was not fazed, however, and despite taking a blow to the head in that first over, he blitzed an astonishing 40 off just 17 balls.
West Indies - against all odds - completed a fourth-innings run-chase by scoring 322-5 to beat England and level the three-match series at 1-1.
It was a very flawed Test match in that I cannot recall ever seeing a side win after dropping seven catches, but I don't want to take anything away from Jason Holder's side.
The way they batted on the final day - and indeed performed over the majority of this Test - was against everyone's expectations.
When I arrived at Headingley on the final day, there was drizzle in the air, it was overcast and James Anderson was three wickets from taking 500 in Tests.
It appeared to be all set in England's favour - especially when you also consider West Indies lost 19 wickets in just one day in the previous Test at Edgbaston.
Unfortunately for England, however, Alastair Cook dropped Kraigg Brathwaite on four and that set the tone for what was to follow on an absorbing final day.

In reply to Warriors first innings total of 158 for 8, Tridents were 19 for 5 at the end of the Powerplay after Tanvir ripped out the heart of the Tridents lineup. The left-arm quick came back later to claim his fifth to cap the most economical five-wicket haul in T20 history, ending with figures of 5 for 3 on a sorry night for the Tridents in which they were bowled out for 59, the second-lowest total in CPL history. The result means that the Warriors now have a four-point lead over the Tridents for fourth place on the CPL points table, putting Tridents in danger of missing the playoffs for the second year in a row.
