ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – The Selection Panel of Cricket West Indies today named a 15-member Windies Test squad for the Tour of England, starting later this month.
Opening batsman Kyle Hope and left-handed all-rounder Raymon Reifer are the only two uncapped players in the squad for the tour which will feature the first ever day/night Test in England from August 18 to 22 at Edgbaston. The second match will be at Headingley (August 25 to 29) with the third at Lord’s (September 7 to 11).
Following the Test matches, the Windies will have the limited overs segment of the tour. The squads for the five One-Day Internationals and one-off T20 International will be named at a later date.
Newly reinstated West Indies batsman Darren Bravo will not feature in the upcoming Test series between the West Indies and England when the Caribbean side tours that country because the team had already been selected for the series.
Bravo apologized for his indiscretions on Wednesday, but it came a week too late as the West Indies selectors had already named the squad.
The left hander is however expected to be in the team for the One Day International series that follows the Test matches which is part of their said tour.
Guardian Media Sports was reliable informed that the teams for England will be revealed in a few days time and included in the line-up is Kemar Roach who has been in the wilderness for quite a while. Another Barbadian, all rounder Raymond Reifer will also be making the trip to England.
THE BIGGEST names in Caribbean cricket could be about to return to the West Indies team after significant progress was made in negotiations between players and the board, according to a story on the Cricinfo website yesterday.
Not only has a resolution been agreed to the Darren Bravo impasse, but the likes of Kieron Pollard, Sunil Narine, Dwayne Bravo and Chris Gayle are also available for selection for the ODI (One Day International) side after an amnesty was proposed by WIPA, the players’ union.
That means they could be available for the limited-overs section of the tour to England that starts in a few weeks.
Gayle, who marked his international return after 15 months during the one-off Twenty20 International against India in Kingston last week, said during an event in Bengaluru, India yesterday that “things have been steadily improving” and playing the 2019 World Cup, for which West Indies may have to qualify, is still a burning desire.
St John’s, ANTIGUA - In respect of the captioned matter, the Player, Nicholas Pooran, was suspended by CWI, in relation to a decision taken by the Player not to play in the Professional Cricket League at the start of the 2016-2017 domestic season, although he was selected by a domestic franchise team. The Player featured in the Bangladesh Premier League instead, after having been granted a NOC by CWI.
The parties jointly state however, that following bilateral good faith discussions, they have decided to settle this matter amicably. The parties add that they are both committed to the development of West Indies Cricket at all levels and continue to have those interests uppermost in their minds.
Whilst not delving into the merits of their respective positions on the matter, the parties regret that it occurred as it did and accept that this has served as a learning experience for both players and administrators, in terms of best practice for the professionalization of cricket in the region.
The time period of the suspension has since expired and the Player is therefore now eligible to play in all three forms of the game for West Indies. Pooran was a member of the President’s XI vs Afghanistan in St Kitts last month.
The parties also reaffirm their commitment to moving forward in strengthening their relationship in the best interests of West Indies Cricket. This statement represents the parties' final public position on this matter.
ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) have today confirmed that batsman Darren Bravo is available with immediate effect to play in all forms of cricket, following his apology to CWI and the President, Dave Cameron.
President Cameron said:
“In early November 2016, I gave an interview to SportsMax TV during which I discussed player retainer contracts and the grades of contract that had been awarded to certain players. In the course of the interview I stated that Darren Bravo had previously been on an ‘A’ contract, which I have since been advised is not correct. I apologize for the misstatement, and wish to assure Mr. Bravo that there was no insult or offense intended towards him. Darren is a senior cricketer who has been a valuable part of the WINDIES set up for a long time, and I would hope to see his game continue to progress and mature, at both regional and international level.”
Darren Bravo issued the following statement: "On the 11th day of November 2016, after viewing statements made about me by Mr. Dave Cameron, President of the Cricket West Indies, on a television sports programme, I tweeted a response which referred to the President which was, in retrospect, inappropriate. As I have always tried to uphold the best traditions of West Indies Cricket and its players, I now therefore wish to withdraw the comment made on my Twitter account and apologize to the President of CWI and to all WINDIES fans.
I look forward to continuing to play a positive role in both the West Indies' senior men’s team and regional cricket, as well as helping to grow and develop cricket in the region at all levels."
