GROS ISLET, St Lucia, (CMC) – West Indies won to level the three-match series with minnows Afghanistan but the inertia remained, as they were forced to labour before pulling off an attritional four-wicket victory in the second One-Day International here Sunday.Their bowling proved more clinical than in Friday’s opening game, scuttling out the Afghans for a paltry 135 off 37.3 overs, after the visitors opted to bat first at the Darren Sammy Cricket Ground.Gulbadin Naib top-scored with 51 batting at number eight but no other batsman passed 20, as West Indies quicks turned the screws on the innings. At one stage, Afghanistan were staring down the barrel at 51 for six in the 17th but recovered through Naib’s enterprise.The fast bowling trio of Alzarri Joseph (2-15), Shannon Gabriel (2-25) and captain Jason Holder (2-38), along with off-spinner Ashley Nurse (2-33) all picked up two wickets each.In reply, West Indies were hardly convincing as they stumbled and stuttered to their target in the 40th over.

SOUTHAMPTON, England, Jun 9, CMC – West Indies Women hit another stumbling block in their preparation for this month’s ICC Women World Cup when they suffered their second defeat in three days with a 80-run loss to Southern Vipers here Friday.
Asked to chase an imposing 296 at the Ageas Bowl, the Caribbean side could only muster 215 for nine off their 50 overs in yet another disappointing batting display.
Chedean Nation top-scored with 59, former skipper Merissa Aguilleira chipped in with a breezy 52 while Deandra Dottin struck a typically cameo 40 and Kyshona Knight, 28.
Left-arm seamer Natasha Farrant did the damage for Vipers with four for 24 from her 10 overs while seamers Sophie Devine (2-23) and Ellen Burt (2-36) ended with two wickets apiece.

GROS ISLET, St Lucia – The fragility of the West Indies team to quality spin was cruelly exposed as they were embarrassed by Afghanistan at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium Friday night.
Afghanistan had won on four previous occasions when leg-spinner Rashid Khan had picked four wickets or more. But Friday night brought him one of his tougher challenges: he had only 212 to defend on a sluggish St Lucia surface but that only seemed to spur him on. The talented 18-year old finished with 7 for 18 – the fourth-best haul in ODI history – and West Indies were bowled out for 149.
The 63-run victory for Afghanistan, their first in this format over a Full Member other than Zimbabwe,
exposed the ineptness of a West Indies unit struggling in their quest to qualify directly for the 2019 World Cup.
Khan, introduced in the 23rd over with West Indies looking seemingly steady at 68 for 2, broke open the game by picking up four wickets for one run. And if that wasn’t impressive enough, he was on a hat-trick twice during the course of his first two overs.

In 1973 West Indies drew 1-all with England in England in their inaugural ODI series but the Caribbean side, winners of the first two World Cups (1975 & 79) and finalists in the third (1983), have not won a ODI series since 2014 when they beat Bangladesh 3-0.
In 2013 they defeated Zimbabwe 3-0 but they have not won an ODI series against a team ranked higher than them since beating New Zealand 4-1 in the 2012. Today at the Darren Sammy Stadium, West Indies and Afghanistan will face-off for the first time in ODI cricket in a Day/Night contest from 14:30hrs.
The ground is large and the track here usually has ‘pace and carry’ and is expected to offer assistance to the quickies. The first of 27 ODIs at this venue was in 2002 when West Indies beat New Zealand by six wickets and the capacity is about 17,000 but a full house is not expected tonight.
This is Afghanistan’s first bilateral tour against a full member nation other than Zimbabwe and all three ODIs are scheduled for St Lucia. West Indies failed to win their last four ODIs here but that is expected to change tonight.

LOUGHBOROUGH, England (CMC) – West Indies Women captain Stafanie Taylor showed early glimpses of form but the Caribbean side lost a warm-up match to a strong England Women XI here yesterday, as they continued to gear up for the ICC Women’s World Cup later this month.
The right-hander, who struggled somewhat in this year’s Regional Super50 Championship, struck an attractive 60 as the tourists were dismissed for a disappointing 150 off 49.3 overs at Loughborough University.
Veteran Deandra Dottin chipped in with 25 and opener Hayley Matthews, 22, but they were three of only four to reach double figures.
