Williams to officiate ICC Women’s World T20 qualifiers in Thailand

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – The West Indies Cricket Board announced on Monday that female umpire Jacqueline Williams has been appointed to the panel of match officials for the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 qualifiers, starting later this week in Thailand.

The 39-year-old Williams hails from the western Jamaica community of Ashton in the parish of Westmoreland. She will officiate at the Tournament which will be contested from November 28 to December 5 in the Thai capital of Bangkok.

Roland Holder, the WICB manager, cricket operations, said the regional governing body had agreed to fast-track Williams in an attempt to get her appointed to the panel of match officials for the ICC Women’s World Cup in 2017.

“This along with her historic appointment to stand in the WICB Professional Cricket League Regional 4-Day Tournament and involvement in the international women’s matches against Pakistan are all a part of her preparation and training,” he said.

“The WICB has also assigned Peter Nero from its International Panel of umpires to assist Jacque with the preparation process and in her development as an umpire.”

On her return from Bangkok, Williams will create history, when she becomes the first female umpire to officiate in the R4Day.

Williams recently made her international debut, when she stood in the first One-day and first Twenty20 Internationals during the Pakistan Women’s Tour of the West Indies.

Windsor Park pitch under investigation

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – The West Indies Cricket Board confirmed on Monday that the pitch used for the third round match between Windward Islands Volcanoes and Leeward Islands Hurricanes in the Professional Cricket League Regional 4-Day Tournament in Dominica will be investigated.

The Volcanoes completed an eight-wicket victory over the Hurricanes inside two days at Windsor Park, located in the Dominica capital of Roseau.

WICB director of cricket Richard Pybus will gather the reports of the match referee and umpires, as well as captains and coaches of each team, along with officials of the Volcanoes franchise regarding the preparation and performance of the pitch.

“We will speak to all of the relevant parties to get a clear picture of what took place at Windsor Park and decide on the course of action once we have reviewed all the reports,” he said.

In the match, Hurricanes declared their first innings before lunch on the opening day last Friday on 24 for seven before Volcanoes gained a lead of 116, thanks to a half-century from opener Tyrone Theophile in the face of a career-best, seven-wicket haul from teenaged fast bowler Alzarri Joseph.

Nkrumah Bonner then stroked his third half-century in six innings before spinners Liam Sebastien and Alston Bobb shared nine wickets between them and the Hurricanes were bowled out for 170, leaving the Volcanoes with the modest target of 55 for victory.

Cameron v the CARICOM

It was inevitable that the high expectations for the latest review of the management of West Indies cricket would quickly turn into the turmoil that has typified its sharp decline over the past two decades.

The conviction of Grenada prime minister Keith Mitchell, head of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) sub-committee on cricket, that no objections would be raised by the WICB president, Dave Cameron, to the conclusions of the independent panel, chaired by the principal of the University of the West Indies Cave Hill campus, Dr Eudene Barriteau, appeared reasonable enough in the circumstances.

The panel was, after all, jointly established by Mitchell and Cameron at a meeting last April; the WICB appointed three of its five members. Mitchell was adamant that Cameron give the assurance then that the WICB would accept all its points.

In reality, such confidence was misplaced.
