The Ridicule of the West Indies team is deserved

by DAVID HINDS

Like every cricket enthusiast I get caught up with the last bad shot played or the recent defeat or the centurion of the day or the averages of the batsmen and the bowlers or who should and should not be selected. But I also want to understand and convey the larger social-political and cultural significance of what occurs on the cricket field. So when I write, that's what is on my mind. Even when I actually say so, I am less interested in whether Sarwan and Gayle should be on the list of West Indian players who could walk into a proper team. Even if I include them it does not change my fundamental point that the present West Indies team is not short of vacancies. Barath's brilliance goes to waste

From DigicelCricket.com

Brisbane, Australia: Despite a remarkable counter-attacking debut century from Adrian Barath, it's done and dusted – the opening Test match between Australia and the West Indies at the Gabba that is. There are two free days for the Australians to put up their feet and enjoy a few celebratory drinks. Those two days would best be spent by the Windies sweating it out in the nets in an attempt to get their batsmen’s heads right.

First Test, Day 2: Familiar positions

From DigicelCricket.com

Brisbane, Australia: After two days of cricket at the Gabba, both teams are in very familiar positions, Australia significantly happier. They are firmly in control of the opening Test after declaring on 480 for 8 while the Windies are struggling just to stay afloat at 134 for 5.

Considering the state of the match, the probability of the Australians asking their guests to return to bat for a second time at some stage on day three is neither remote nor unlikely. The follow on target is 280 and the Windies are a healthy 146 runs away with five wickets in the tank. Overall the Caribbean side trail Australia by a mammoth 346 with just the bowlers remaining to bat.

Aussies ahead but Windies battling

From DigicelCricket.com

Brisbane, Australia: Half centuries from opener Simon Katich, captain Ricky Ponting and Michael ‘Mr. Cricket’ Hussey handed Australia a distinct but not overwhelming advantage after day one of the opening Test against the West Indies at the Gabba.

The home side – having opted to bat upon winning the toss – closed on what must have been a gratifying but not domineering 322 for 5 with Marcus North on 42 and wicketkeeper Brad Haddin in his company on 9. With an Australian tail known for wagging they will have their sights set on a total well over 400 on day two.
