Usain Bolt turns to cricket

The fastest man in the world will be joining Chris Gayle, Curtly Ambrose, Courtney Walsh, and several other past and present West Indian cricket stars in a one day Pro 15/15 cricket tournament in Discovery Bay on Sunday, October 18th. This is the second such event, led by Chris Gayle and sponsored by Digicel, in which mixed teams of local youth cricketers and celebrities compete together.

In the Digicel press release Bolt is quoted as saying "in terms of sport, cricket is my first love. I grew up watching cricketers like Courtney Walsh take the West Indies to new heights – and I am a big admirer of Chris Gayle for his power batting and calm attitude; he is my favourite player right now. So, to have the chance to play with these guys is a dream come true for me".

T&T eject Deccan Chargers in a nailbiter

Despite a few jitters at the end, Trinidad and Tobago held on to beat Deccan Chargers in today's Champions League Twenty20 match in front of the Chargers' home crowd in Hyderabad. The Indian team needed a win to keep their hopes in this tournament alive.

William Perkins top scored for T&T with 38 off 32 in their total of 149. In reply, Adam Gilchrist fired off a blistering 51 before falling to a brilliant catch by Kieron Pollard off the bowling of Lendl Simmons. It was a stop and go affair after that, with the match teetering back and forth between the two teams, but with Dwayne Bravo (3 for 24) leading the attack, it came down to a final over and the final ball leaving Deccan Chargers still four runs short.

Trinidad and Tobago's victory today gives new hope to Somerset, who stood to be eliminated had T&T not won. CricInfo has the details and the scorecard.

Is it finally settled -- again?

News is seeping out from around the region and beyond (Barbados Advocate, Jamaica Observer, Reuters India) that the months long impasse between the players and the Board might be nearing its latest completion. The West Indies Players Association's website is announcing in a "joint statement" -- which has not yet appeared on the WICB's site -- that "nearly all outstanding matters in dispute between the two bodies have been settled amicably".

The statement says that "only two outstanding matters - the issue regarding the India 2009 Tour and the issue of 'Team Rights' - will be referred to a special arbitration process as set out in the recommendations of the CARICOM Prime Ministerial Sub Committee on Cricket given on the 11th September 2009 and agreed to by the WICB and WIPA."
