And why not? They were quarterfinalists last WC. It wasn't far-fetched to think they could go one step further this time around. Being without their star striker today just made it a bit more difficult to get past France.

Too bad France didn't get a 3rd. That would be poetic justice after the AFCON was stolen from Senegal and Morocco awarded a 3-0 win after ACTUALLY losing 1-0.

Their star striker is ordinary and wouldn't have gotten any more shots on goal after the midfield got choked.

Regarding waiting to see where it's kicked only 1/10 would be saved. Few humans have the reflexes to stop a power shot from the penalty spot by moving only after it is kicked.

Thats the point. The penalty takers are so concerned with missing that they are waiting to see where the goalie goes, by that time they can barely put much power behind the shot.

That happened just yesterday with Mbappe and same happened with Messi.

There were also quite a few during the shootout that went straight down the middle.

The anxiety of the situation has forced mqny players to fake out the goalie raather than risk a skilful placement.

The only issue i have with France, is that they continually wait for the defense to set, while they set their attack, rather than push ahead when regaining the ball in the midfield.

I think they miss out on more opportunities from that.

But that team is as solid as they come. Messi and the seeming issues with officiating gets all the headlines, but France plays an open game, one on one mostly on defense, yet has only allowed what, one or two goals?

That team has been amazing.

Also, Franc3 has played better competition overall. The best team Argentina faced, Egypt, almost knocked them out.

Where as france' group still has 2 teams in the tournament and a third, Senegal was really competitive in the knockout round.

I would not be surprised if France amd Norway plays the final.

My brother, I take the time to respond because you have always proven in your post to be objective. At first glance, the two situations appear to be the same - the foul on Martinez that led to the Egyptian goal and the foul on Salah that led to the Argentinian goal. But they are not. The foul on Martinez was outside the penalty box. Whereas the contact with Salah was in the penalty box. The threshold for a foul is much higher in the penalty box. And this is not my opinion, nor is it the opinion of VAR. These are the rules that FIFA laid down before the tournament started.

Argentina has not played well the entire tournament. The dominant teams have been France, Norway, and England. It’s difficult to see how they can continue to win playing like this. The flipside of that coin of course is that if they’re winning playing like this, what happens if their game kicks into gear?
