GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – Schools throughout the Caribbean Community are being given an opportunity to vie for cricket nets as part of a new initiative announced by the Georgetown-based Secretariat yesterday called the ‘Pitch in Schools Project’.
The project will provide primary and secondary schools with an opportunity to vie for the construction of cricket net facilities or an upgrade to such facilities where they already exist.
The project emanated from a plan developed by Deputy Programme Manager for Sports at the CARICOM Secretariat, John Campbell.
“The proposal will provide a means through which the infrastructure and facilities available in schools across the region can be developed as a step towards the improvement of cricket in schools,” said a statement released by the CARICOM Secretariat yesterday.

Big picture
Last summer was South Africa's season of significant loss, as far as Test cricket was concerned. They were confronted with the retirements of two of their most experienced players - Jacques Kallis and Graeme Smith - and they were defeated for the first time in a series since claiming the Test mace, by Australia. This summer, they plan on it being a season of significant gain.
Any margin of victory over West Indies will keep South Africa at No.1 but it is not just rankings points that they hope to gain. A new batsman, likely to be Stiaan van Zyl, will be blooded while JP Duminy recovers from a knee injury; a relatively new opener, Dean Elgar, will have the chance to cement his spot; and two new squad members, Temba Bavuma and Kagiso Rabada, will have the opportunity to be integrated into the national set-up. It is a time of personal growth for South Africa, which they believe they can afford to have against the No.8-ranked side.

WEST INDIES batsman Darren Bravo joined the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force training camp yesterday as the team started its preparations for the 2015 Nagico Super50 which takes place in T&T from January 15-25.
Bravo, along with fast-bowler Ravi Rampaul, off-spinner Sunil Narine, leg-spinner Samuel Badree and all-rounder Kevon Cooper were all named in a 33-member Red Force training squad which was released yesterday.
The players had their first training session at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain, Couva, yesterday and will have another session today before they play their first 50-over practice match tomorrow at Gilbert Park, California.
Bravo opted out of the West Indies tour of South Africa because of personal reasons and was also missing from the Red Force Professional Cricket League (PCL) four-day competition.

MUMBAI, India (CMC):West Indies Twenty20 captain Darren Sammy is among five Caribbean players released by their Indian Premier League franchises, ahead of the new season, which bowls off next April.
The former Test skipper has been joined by pacers Ravi Rampaul, Jason Holder, Krishmar Santokie, and Kevon Cooper as players who will be seeking a new franchise for the upcoming IPL season.
Since his retirement from Test cricket earlier this year, Sammy has plied his trade extensively in the T20 leagues around the globe, playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in India, Glamorgan in England and more recently, Titans in South Africa.
A big-hitting lower-order batsman who bowls deceptive medium pace, Sammy is already a seasoned campaigner in the game's shortest form, having already played 143 T20s.
However, he spent just two seasons with the Sunrisers franchise.

Perth, Australia - A bumper crowd has packed Perth’s Aquinas College to watch some of the greats of past and players of the present as the Perth Scorchers beat the Australian Legends by 50 runs in the WA Festival of Cricket Twenty20.
The match pitted the KFC T20 Big Bash League reigning champions Scorchers against an all-star Legends XI led by Adam Gilchrist, but it was the youth of Ashton Turner that stole the show in a match that featured West Indies champion Brian Lara and Australian legends Dean Jones, Andrew Symonds, Andy Bichel and Michael Kasporwicz.
