After ending their three-game Florida 'home' slate winless, the Jamaica Tallawahs looked more at ease in a true road setting as Andre Russell's charges rediscovered the winning touch in St Lucia by scoring a 21-run win over St Lucia Stars. A match-up with the franchise holding the most losses in CPL history was just the tonic the Tallawahs needed to reclaim the first place on the table as Rovman Powell's splendid 64 took the Tallawahs past 200.
Needing 124 off the final 10 overs of the chase, the Stars threatened briefly behind David Warner, Kieron Pollard and Lendl Simmons but were left with too much work to do in the end after a poor start to their reply. With just four points from eight matches, Stars' playoff hopes are hanging by a thread as they head back on the road for their final two contests against St Kitts & Nevis Patriots and Barbados Tridents.
St Lucia Stars skipper Kieron Pollard kept his team’s Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) season alive with a six-wicket victory over table-toppers Guyana Amazon Warriors at the Daren Sammy Stadium. Pollard ultimately proved the difference in a cagey, low-scoring game. The Stars had bowled superbly to restrict the Warriors to 140/9 but had found run-scoring just as tough themselves; the game was firmly in the balance when Devendra Bishoo stepped up to bowl the 18th over of the run-chase with the Stars still needing 31 to record their second victory of the season. Six balls later, the scores were level after an astonishing assault from Pollard, who launched the first two balls for six before crunching the third for four. The fourth ball produced another six, by far the biggest of the lot as Pollard sent the ball into orbit and out of the ground. Two more fours were smashed back past the hapless Bishoo – struggling to grip a damp ball after an earlier rain delay – and the game was all but done. Andre Fletcher, who had anchored the run-chase with a mature unbeaten 45 – completed the formalities at the start of the 19th over. Pollard, meanwhile, had catapulted from 11* from 12 balls to end on 41* from 18.
KINGSTOWN, St Vincent—T&T defeated the Windward Islands by a 114 runs in their Regional Under-19 50-over Championships at Park Hill Playing Field yesterday.
T&T posted the day’s highest total of 219 and then routed Windwards for just 105.
Nathaniel McDavid (44), Avinash Mahabirsingh (39) and Justyn Gangoo, who made 24, mounted a serious lower order fightback for T&T after they had slumped to 84 for five.
Then in a sensational bowling performance, the T&T opening pair of Jayden Seales and Joshua James dismissed Windwards first four batsmen for ducks to practically seal the contest.
James finished with figures of 4-34, and with help from Justyn Gangoo who claimed 3 for 16, and Seales (2-16), they helped to wrap up T&T’s innings.
KINGSTOWN, St Vincent (CMC) — West Indies Under-19 opener Shian Brathwaite stroked a half-century to power Barbados to their second win of the Regional Under-19 one-day championship, while Guyana also remained unbeaten in the third round of matches here Monday.
Playing at the Arnos Vale Stadium, Barbados chased down 154 to dispose of the previously unbeaten Windward Islands by seven wickets with Brathwaite stroking an unbeaten 73.
Brathwaite faced 103 balls and crunched five fours and sixes, anchoring three key partnerships to control a tricky run chase.
Firstly, he added 47 for the first wicket with Mekhail Marshall who made 24 before putting a further 46 for the third wicket with Kadeem Alleyne (15).
Finally, he paired with Antonio Morris (24 not out) in an unbroken 51-run, fourth wicket partnership which put Barbados over the line.
Earlier, fast bowler Matthew Forde ripped through the Windwards with a spell of five for 38 to send them tumbling for 153 all out in the 44th over.
Lincoln Durand top-scored with 43 and Jeron Noel got 30, the pair adding 66 for the eighth wicket after the innings lay in ruins at 64 for seven in the 19th over.
Steve Smith scored 63 and took 2/19 as Barbados Tridents stole a remarkable two-run Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) victory against Jamaica Tallawahs in Florida. The Tallawahs’ failure to chase down 157 having powered to 80/0 in the first nine overs of their run-chase means it’s now three defeats from three at Central Broward Regional Park for a team that started their Hero CPL campaign with three straight victories.
Even when a few wickets fell around the midway point of the innings and the required rate began to climb the Tallawahs always appeared to have things under control. Even when tight bowling from Mohammad Irfan and Wahab Riaz left Raymon Reifer with nine runs to defend in the final over the game appeared to be the Tallawahs’ to lose.
Miller could only heave the final delivery down the ground for a single, prompting celebrations from the Tridents players while Andre Russell was left unused on the Tallawahs bench.
Reifer took the congratulations for a fine closing over – making amends for a poor initial spell and two dropped catches in the deep – but there was no doubt about the hero of the hour for the Tridents.
Before his two wickets to stop the Tallawahs running away with it, Steve Smith had been the chief architect of the Tridents’ recovery from 39/3, sharing an intelligent and increasingly assured 103-run partnership with Shai Hope. The Tridents’ 156/6 looked a few runs below par at the halfway stage, but it gave them something to bowl at which would prove so critical later in the night.
