St John’s, ANTIGUA – Cricket West Indies (CWI) has confirmed its continued commitment to further developing Women’s Cricket in the region.
Following the successful declaration of the three host countries; Guyana, St. Lucia and Antigua and Barbuda, for the upcoming ICC Women’s World T20 2018 that will be held in the Caribbean in November, CWI Chief Executive Johnny Grave said, “As defending World T20 Champions, the ICC Women’s World T20 2018 provides us with the perfect platform for promoting and growing the women’s game throughout the Caribbean.
The CEO added “we will shortly be announcing our new five-year strategic plan and improving the opportunities for women and girls to get involved in cricket is one of our top priorities. Our annual investment in Women’s Cricket is now approaching US$3 million a year, which includes significantly increased retainers for our WINDIES Women’s team, as well as their participation in the 2nd Edition of the ICC Women’s Championship.
A fightback that began in the middle of the Barbados Pride innings helped the Windward Islands Volcanoes dethrone the defending Cricket West Indies Regional Super50 Festival champions in the final at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua and Barbuda on Saturday.
The Volcanoes ended up three-wicket winners in a closely contested affair, scoring 236-7 in chase of the Pride’s 232-9. There were still three deliveries to go when West Indies Under-19 batsman Alick Athanaze drove Shamar Springer to the cover boundary for the winning runs.
Choosing to bat first, the Pride looked in good shape, despite losing the wicket of Omar Phillips for a duck, after Jonathan Carter, promoted to number three, scored a handsome 80 from 108 deliveries to help get them on the way.
Pride skipper, Kraigg Brathwaite, could only manage 30 after his semi-final hundred put the defending champions into the final, but Roston Chase’s 44 right after his captain’s departure threatened to indicate a score over 250 was on the cards.
CMC – FAST-bowling star, Jofra Archer says his snub by West Indies selectors for the 2014 Under-19 World Cup fueled his desire to represent England, and has once again shot down any suggestion of representing the Caribbean side. The 22-year-old Barbadian featured in three matches for the Young Windies on Bangladesh Under-19’s tour of the Caribbean in 2013, but failed to make the final cut for the World Cup staged in the United Arab Emirates the following year.“It wasn’t really anything to do with injuries,” Archer told the Times about his being overlooked. “I wasn’t selected, so I had to think about what to do next. Once I knew it was an option, it was an easy decision to move to England.”He added: “I was angry with the West Indies, so that helped me with my decision to come and try to play for England.”
The Windwards Volcanoes booked a spot in the finals of the 2018 CWI Super50 Cup on Thursday night following a convincing 56-run victory over their more-fancied rivals the Guayana Jaguars at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua.
The Volcanoes owed their victory to a run-a-ball century from Tyrone Theophile and a Man-of-the-Match performance from Kavem Hodge, who scored a half-century and picked up three wickets during the Jaguar chase.
Having won the toss, the Jaguars, the four-day champions sent the Volcanoes into bat on a good pitch. However, by the ninth over they were two wickets down losing the out-of-form Johnson Charles and Devon Smith with 50 runs on the board.
Kirk Edwards and Theophile began a repair job with a third-wicket stand of 73 that was broken when Edwards was caught and bowled by Ralmaal Lewis for 27.
The Barbados Pride survived a spirited chase by English county Kent to book their place in the final of the Regional Super50 Championship at Coolidge, Antigua, tonight.
Winning the toss and batting first, the Pride made 263 for 3 off their 50 overs. And chasing a revised target of 230 in 43 overs after a second shower, Kent caused a scare in reaching 216 for 8 in 43 overs. Earlier the target had initially been readjusted to a requirement of 259 in 48 overs after the first downpour.
The Pride never got into full throttle down the stretch and after losing only three wickets, could not have been totally satisfied with their eventual score. They got off to an excellent start thanks to openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Omar Phillips who put together 93 for the first wicket. The left-handed Phillips was the more fluent of the two and kept the scoreboard ticking over. He brought up a well-played half-century off the 64th ball bowled to him and counted eight boundaries. He was eventually dismissed for 62 off 70 balls when he missed an attempted sweep and was leg before wicket by off-spinner Adam Riley. In all, he struck ten boundaries and was dismissed in the 22nd over.
