Earlier this month in the Pakistani port city of Karachi, a
suicide bomber drove a car full of explosives into a bus parked
outside the Sheraton Hotel. The blast killed 14 people and also
forced the cancellation of series between Pakistan and New Zealand
which was scheduled to start that morning. The Sheraton had been
playing host to both teams.
Ian Bishop, the former Trinidad and Tobago and West Indies fast
bowler, was doing television commentary on the series for Trans
World International (TWI). He was also a guest at the hotel. That
morning, he was late for breakfast. A minute late. In that minute,
the breakfast area was blasted...

Did you know Chris Gayle just achieved something the great
Desmond Haynes never did? How does Wavell Hinds compare to the late
Roy Fredericks? Did you know Brian Lara has genuine problems
against left-arm bowlers?
There were more than a few significant statistical milestones
achieved during the decisive fifth Test match at Sabina Park.
CaribbeanCricket.com statistician Zito sifts through the

West Indies began the fourth day at 165/7, knowing that another
25 runs would give them a lead of over 400, which would all but put
the match beyond the reach of India.
Chanderpaul was out almost immediately after resumption, caught by
Zaheer Khan off his own bowling. He had come in to bat when the
score was 60/4, with only Lara, among the recognised batsmen left.
Lara was dismissed when the score was 81, and the score moved to
170 when Chanderpaul was out, which meant Chanderpaul added nearly
90 runs with Jacobs and the tail. His partnership with Collins had
added 48 critical runs.

West Indies fast bowling great Michael Holding is urging
Caribbean cricket fans not to be too critical of gifted young
Guyanese batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan who has constantly failed to
convert several fifties into a maiden Test century.
The stylish 21-year-old right-hander flattered to deceive yet again
when he was out for 65 on Saturday?s opening day of the fifth and
final Cable & Wireless Test against India at Sabina Park.

Let me make a disclaimer right up front. I'm cynical. Very
cynical. I equate West Indies cricket to Caribbean politics, where
our politicians have mastered the art of the four-year 'take and
give' trick. Every four years, they take with panache and style.
And just before elections, they give with an equal flamboyance and
a hint of genuine concern, style replaced with a work ethic that
would kill most normal advocates of last minute bobol.
The West Indies selectors have an unenviable job. They preside over
the remnants of a proud heritage. They are not paid. They do not
get to travel with the team and are generally on a hiding to
nothing. I have no doubt these guys are trying their best. At this
point I hope enough tears have been shed. I am barely managing to
dry my eyes as I write.
