Jamaica were on course for a remarkable win over Trinidad and
Tobago yesterday at the close of the third day of the Busta
International Shield semifinal cricket match at Sabina Park.
Chasing 205 for victory, the defending champions are 103 runs for
the loss of one wicket. They require another 102 runs for
victory.
Leeward Islands opener and captain Stuart Williams fashioned a
boundary-studded unbeaten 176, while Runako Morton failed by four
runs to record his third century in this year?s Busta Cup/Shield
tournament as the Leewards ended the penultimate day of their
semifinal 163 runs adrift of Guyana?s imposing first innings score
of 491 with six wickets intact.
The two, who featured in a second-wicket partnership of 201 in just
189 minutes after the Leewards had lost an early wicket, have set
the stage for an enthralling final day?s play today.
Former West Indies fast bowler Michael Holding has denied
accusing Sri Lanka spinner Muttiah Muralitharan of having an
illegal bowling action.
Holding, an International Cricket Council (ICC) appointed bowling
advisor, was quoted in Wisden Asia Cricket Monthly as saying that
he was in "110 per cent agreement" with Bishen Bedi, who accused
Muralitharan of having an illegal action.
The sun failed to shine in all its glory at Albion yesterday but
Guyana and West Indies batsman Carl Hooper enlivened the day?s
proceedings with a magnificent innings of surpassing brilliance
against the Leeward Islands in the Busta International Shield
semifinal, much to the delight of a disappointing Saturday crowd.
The enigmatic Hooper, who resumed on 52 with Guyana on 230 for
four, slammed a career regional best 222 as Guyana reached 491 all
out in the last over of the second day?s play.
THERE are few arenas in cricket to rival Sabina Park when it's
bubbling. Boos and whistles gush down in torrents from the
sprawling George Headley Stand.
Like the Christians in the coliseums of ancient Rome, visiting
teams do not get much sympathy. But yesterday afternoon as the sun
began to go down, Lapeyrouse Cemetery at midnight could not have
been more silent.
