Ottis Gibson in the media

As the West Indies side arrives in Trinidad ahead of their series opener against Zimbabwe on Sunday, newly appointed head coach Ottis Gibson is taking a fresh look at fitness. In a report in the Jamaica Observer he says "The physical aspect of all sports determines whether an athlete will be successful or not. It is key as far as I'm concerned".

Apparently there are other keys too. In an article on CricInfo Gibson also says "the key is unity and strength and it always has been. During the 1980s and 1990s when West Indies were strong, I'm sure there were differences within the team, but the players pulled together and Clive Lloyd, way back in the 80s, was able to get them to come together for a common cause."

Never one to mince words, the Master Blaster takes aim at the WICB and players alike in a report from Australia's Herald Sun. 

"Some of our players today don't seem too sure who or what they are representing. Even though the board is not behaving well they must still have personal pride," he is quoted as saying.

On the subject of funding for West Indies cricket he draws a barbed comparison with "you have to know what Robert Mugabe is like in Zimbabwe, do you pump money into an establishment where the money doesn't filter through?".

Twenty20 'ripe for corruption'

International players' union FICA chief executive Tim May has warned that Twenty20 cricket is "ripe for corruption" and urged the sport's administrators to exercise extreme care.

"Twenty20 is just ripe for corruption -- the shorter the game the more influence each particular incident can have," the former Australia off-spinner said in an interview in the March issue of The Wisden Cricketer magazine which goes on sale this Friday.

Lara robbed

Brian Lara is in the news again, but this time it seems that the West Indies cricket legend has been the victim of theft. BVI News Online is reporting that a woman has been arrested and that police seized more than 40 bottles of premium liquor, jewelry and four-autographed cricket bats from the woman’s home during a search on Wednesday night.

From a report in the Trinidad Express: 

Several items, including jewelry, clothing and an honorary Order of Australia award-which was given to him during the hosting of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting last year by Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd-along with an undisclosed sum of cash, were stolen.
