Chris Gayle is one of the biggest crowd-pullers in Twenty20 leagues across the world but when he is labelled a mercenary, he feels "sad" his numerous performances over the years for West Indies, including in Test matches, are ignored.
"I have been giving my all for West Indies for 13 years now," Gayle told The Indian Express. "So it's sad when people just forget all that I've achieved for the Caribbean and use such derogatory terms. I have scored runs and won matches in Test cricket as well. There are other cricketers too who get bracketed in that category. It's unfair but you can't stop tongues from wagging."
ST. GEORGE’S Grenada – A solid all-round performance from Shaquana Quintyne marked the semi-finals of the Regional Women’s Twenty20 Tournament on Wednesday, propelling Barbados into the Grand Final against current holders Jamaica.
The 17-year-old Quintyne, a member of the West Indies Women’s team for the last two years, led the Barbadian batting with a resolute half-century and then undermined Trinidad & Tobago’s batting with her steady leg-spin in a 30-run victory.
Chris Gayle's all-round efforts helped Jamaica Tallawahs to a three-wicket victory over Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel and secured their position as second in the group, tied on 10 points with Guyana Amazon Warriors.
Red Steel will play Guyana Amazon Warriors in the first semi-final on August 22, while Tallawahs will play Barbados Tridents in the second semi-final on August 23. Red Steel were put into bat, but were unable to build significant partnerships through the disciplined bowling and fielding performance of the Tallawahs.
Sri Lanka batsman Kumar Sangakkara is set to join the Jamaica Tallawahs for the final stretch of the Caribbean Premier League. The 35-year-old replaces Pakistan top-order batsman Ahmed Shehzad, who will join the Pakistan squad in Zimbabwe.
"I did not expect to be playing the CPL this year, but when Muralitharan telephoned and asked whether I might be interested in playing for the Jamaica Tallawahs, I jumped at the chance," Sangakkara said. "To play alongside Murali again will, of course, be a great privilege and it will also be very exciting to bat with Chris [Gayle] rather than being his opponent. The Tallawahs have had a great season thus far and I hope I can make a positive contribution as we seek to win the inaugural tournament."
