Roach holds nerve to win it for Windies

KINGSTON, Jamaica – West Indies defeated India by one wicket in the second match of the Tri-Nation series at Sabina Park on Sunday.

Responding to India's 229 for 7 off 50 overs, West Indies scored 230 for nine, off 47.4 overs.

When India travel, money follows

It only needed a quick glance around Sabina Park on Friday to understand why India are here for the ODI triangular with West Indies and Sri Lanka, rather than the two Tests, three ODIs and one T20 against Sri Lanka as stipulated on the ICC's Future Tours Programme (FTP).

The switch has little to do with cricket, all to do with the money that follows India wherever they go.

The teams are playing for the Celkon Mobile Cup, the name of a large Hyderabad-based manufacturer of mobile phones. It and a host of other Indian products and services, household names in the subcontinent, but unheard of in these parts, fill the ground perimeter advertising boards.

West Indies start off Tri-Nation Series on a winning note

At the Media Launch of the Celkon Mobile Cup Tri-Nation Series last Thursday, West Indies’ Dwayne Bravo said that his aim as ODI captain is to create a winning culture. Chris Gayle’s century on Friday at Sabina Park in the first match of the series is one small step on the road to what Bravo no doubt hopes will be a successful stint as ODI captain.

With West Indies chasing 209 for victory, Gayle struck his third century at Sabina Park – the most of his 21 tons at any one ground – on a day which forecasters had suggested would see some rain. While the weather stayed hazy and humid for most of the day’s play, the only rain came from Gayle’s bat in the form of runs.

Chris Gayle had failed to leave a mark in cold and wet England, but he probably knows there is only one thing cool in the warmer climes of Jamaica - he himself. And no one at Sabina Park would disagree. After a lean patch in the Champions Trophy where his highest score was 39, Gayle scored his 21st ODI century - his first against Sri Lanka - as West Indies brushed the visitors aside by six wickets and earned a bonus point in the first match of the tri-series.

Sammy deserved longer run - Lloyd

Former West Indies cricket captain Clive Lloyd says Darren Sammy should not have been relieved of his duties as skipper of the regional side for One Day International (ODI) matches.

Sammy, who has been retained as captain of the T20 and Test teams, was removed as leader of the ODI squad and replaced with Dwayne Bravo who captained the side in the just ended ICC Champions Trophy.

Lloyd, who led West Indies during an era when they were world beaters, says the St Lucian all-rounder deserves to be retained as captain since he has performed well in the role.

"I don't have a problem with Dwayne's (Bravo) captaincy; he is a fine cricketer and can be called upon anytime," said Lloyd.
