Half-centuries from the Ganga brothers and a valuable unbeaten
47 by Ricardo Powell sparked underdogs Trinidad & Tobago to an
11-run victory over Barbados in the first semi final of this year's
unsponsored West Indies one-day competition.
Sherwin Ganga (66) teamed up with captain Daren Ganga (50) to
lead Trinidad & Tobago's chase of a target of 276 set by the
pre-tournament favourites. When bad light stopped play and forced
the implementation of the Duckworth/Lewis system, Trinidad were
declared victors at 256 for five (46.2 overs).

musings with PERCY PATSON
Percy Patson back here chaps. Still not yet recovered fully from
the Test series humiliation, but good ole Percy was the toast of
Oxfordshire after the West Indian boys spanked the English in the
ICC Champions Trophy.
Walking around in a West Indies shirt suddenly became less of a
bait for bad jokes. One woman even offered to wear my shirt the
morning after, but Percy, in the new manner of disciplined West
Indian, took a phone number and promised to call. Plus, she wasn't
all that fit -- this new Percy has standards.

Guyana, the site of the preliminary round of this year's
unsponsored West Indies one-day tournament, epitomizes the
complacency and inertia that ails cricket in the region.
The tournament bowled off in a country where most of the traffic
lights are broken and traffic laws are largely non-existent. Where,
on the 26-mile ride to the airport, no less than seventeen bridges
are in various stages of repair, making traversing the East Bank
public road during rush hour a marathon exercise in patience.

The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) is on the verge of naming
Australian Bennett King as its new head coach, Wisden
Cricinfo is reporting.
The Web site said a formal announcement was expected later on
Monday. King was
originally identified as the senior team coach in early 2003
but he famously turned down the job and embarrassed the WICB in the
process.

from MICHELLE McDONALD in Guyana
Xavier Marshall?s unbeaten century in his first season at this
level could not prevent Jamaica from being sent packing by Guyana,
in another thrilling encounter at Bourda. Making good use of the
home advantage, Guyana propelled themselves to a three-wicket win
over the Jamaicans to move into the semi-final round in
Barbados.
