Brisbane, Australia: After two days of cricket at the Gabba, both teams are in very familiar positions, Australia significantly happier. They are firmly in control of the opening Test after declaring on 480 for 8 while the Windies are struggling just to stay afloat at 134 for 5.

Considering the state of the match, the probability of the Australians asking their guests to return to bat for a second time at some stage on day three is neither remote nor unlikely. The follow on target is 280 and the Windies are a healthy 146 runs away with five wickets in the tank. Overall the Caribbean side trail Australia by a mammoth 346 with just the bowlers remaining to bat.

Brisbane, Australia: Half centuries from opener Simon Katich, captain Ricky Ponting and Michael ‘Mr. Cricket’ Hussey handed Australia a distinct but not overwhelming advantage after day one of the opening Test against the West Indies at the Gabba.

The home side – having opted to bat upon winning the toss – closed on what must have been a gratifying but not domineering 322 for 5 with Marcus North on 42 and wicketkeeper Brad Haddin in his company on 9. With an Australian tail known for wagging they will have their sights set on a total well over 400 on day two.

Gayle will be back in Aus for first Test

Late Saturday evening West Indies captain Chris Gayle Saturday confirmed that following the discharge of his mother from hospital, he will return to Australia to lead the Caribbean side in the first Test at the Gabba.

Gayle’s mother – Heazlyn Gilroy – was discharged from the Medical Associates Hospital in Kingston on Saturday evening and the 30 year old hard hitting opening batsman immediately made plans to depart Jamaica on Monday for Australia via Los Angeles, USA. The opening Test is slated to commence on Thursday November 26th and he will arrive in Queensland on Tuesday.

Official slams WICB over Omar Khan

A regional cricket official has slammed the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) over their treatment of former manager of the West Indies team, T&T’s Omar Khan. The current WICB official, who spoke to the Guardian on the condition of anonymity, said Khan was given a five-year contract two years ago to manage teams put out by the WICB. He started by being manager of the West Indies senior team. These days he is being used as manager of the West Indies Under-19 team, while the WICB tries out different options with the senior team.
