Stanford offers $5M to ICC World Twenty20 champs

In an exciting addition to the already thrilling final to the ICC World Twenty20 Championship, Allen Stanford put out an offer of US$5 Million to the winner to come to the Caribbean and play the Stanford Super Star Team in 2008.

The US$5 Million winner-take-all match is scheduled for June 29th at the picturesque Stanford Cricket Ground in Antigua. The Super Star Team will be chosen from the players participating in the Stanford 20/20 Regional Tournament taking place from January 25th to February 24th 2008.

Criticisms have come hard and fast for the West Indies cricket team after their early departure from the over-hyped ICC Twenty20 tournament. The team got it good from Bangladesh and gave it away like a sweetie to South Africa in the opening match. In both instances, sloppiness was a key factor to the outcomes.

Watching Chris Gayle's astonishingly powerful century that gifted the tournament with an early and super spectacle, it came to me that this was going to be the highlight, at least for West Indian fans, of the entire show. So I stopped what I was doing and surrendered to simply enjoying it for what it was – no expectations – a lovely, exciting innings, that was all.

Although Shivnarine Chanderpaul missed out on individual honours at the recent International Cricket Council awards ceremony in South Africa, his status as a leading batsman in the cricketing world has certainly been enhanced in the last few years.

Having been nominated in three categories for the 2007 ICC awards -- International Player-of-the-Year, Test Player-of-the-Year and One-Day International Player-of-the-Year -- the Tiger was short listed as one of four cricketers for the International Player-of-the-Year award alongside the likes of Ricky Ponting, Mohammad Yousuf and Kevin Pietersen, big names in world cricket these days.
