West Indies Men’s Training Squad start to receive vaccinations against COVID-19

Wednesday, 19 May 2021 — ST. JOHN’S, Antigua - Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirms that 13 members of the West Indies Men’s red ball training squad and management have received vaccinations against COVID-19 in St. Lucia, where they are preparing for the upcoming ICC World Test Championship Test matches against South Africa.

CWI, in partnership with the Government of St. Lucia, through the support of the Ministry of Health and the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), has been able to secure COVID-19 vaccines for all interested squad members. CWI has been supporting the efforts of regional governments to encourage everyone to get vaccinated against COVID-19, with the West Indies Women’s training squad receiving their first doses while at their training camp in Antigua last week.

CWI’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Israel Dowlat offered CWI’s appreciation of the support received on the vaccinations and their importance to the squad.

Proteas eyeing competitive series against West Indies

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (CMC) — Cricket South Africa (CSA) said it was anticipating a competitive tour of the Caribbean next month, especially with both teams “evenly matched” for the Test and Twenty20 series.

The hosts are ranked sixth in Tests, one place higher than the Proteas, but are four places below them in T20 Internationals, despite being the reigning world champions.

“Tours to the West Indies are always one of the most highly anticipated tours of them all, not only because of the beauty of the venues but the quality and competitiveness of the cricket that is in store,” said CSA director of cricket, Graeme Smith.

“We are looking forward to explosive displays of cricket and entertainment on our screens for fans around the world to consume as the two evenly matched countries come together for both Test and T20 cricket.”

KNIGHT AND MATTHEWS SMASH HALF-CENTURIES IN FIRST PRACTICE MATCH

Kyshona Knight and Hayley Matthews registered half-centuries in the first practice match of the West Indies Women’s high-performance camp in Antigua.

Head Coach Courtney Walsh opened the camp with a 35-over match at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, to ease the players back into the rigours of international cricket. Captains Hayley Matthews and Anisa Mohammed commandeered teams that saw the ideal combination of returning experienced players as well as the new players to camp.

The veterans put their hands up in this opening match, with Matthews and Knight taking the lead. Rashada Williams, the wicketkeeper/batter from Jamaica showed her patient batting, reminiscent of that of Stafanie Taylor. Williams supported her captain Matthews as the pair along with extras took their team to 100 before the loss of Williams’ wicket in the 20th over. Aaliyah Alleyne was the next batter into double figures with 17 for Matthews XI.
