Former South African all-rounder, Mike Procter, will be the
match referee during the Test and one-day series between India and
West Indies starting in India from October 9.
Niranjan Shah, the outgoing Secretary of the Board of Control for
Cricket in India, said that England's David Shepperd and Sri Lankan
Ashoka D'silva will be the neutral umpires for the three Tests.
Javagal Srinath will return to test match cricket just four
months after retiring in India's home series against the West
Indies next month.
Indian captain Saurav Ganguly confirmed to SkySports that Srinath,
who has taken more than 200 test wickets, will lead his attack
again in the series against Carl Hooper's side. The veteran
pacemen, who has been working as a Sky Sports pundit, has already
answered India's SOS after Ashish Nehra's injury and will face Sri
Lanka in Sunday's ICC Champions Trophy final.
Clearly, the ailing Brian Lara will be sorely missed by the West
Indies Cricket team for the three-Test and one-day tour of India,
which begins later this week.
His phenomenal series in a losing cause against Sri Lanka including
the offspinner, Muttiah Muralitharan, on that country's turning
wickets late last year, proved yet again that Lara can be an
absolute master against high-quality spin. Yet, a look at the
records will show that on the West Indies' last Test tour of India
way back in late 1994, the left-handed Trinidadian champion was not
a major factor, scoring just 198 runs in six innings for a series
average of 33.00.
The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) is investigating Runako
Morton's premature departure from the West Indies? tour schedule in
Sri Lanka.
Morton stunned his family in Nevis last week when he returned home
after telling the team's management that his grandmother had died.
It was revealed subsequently that one of his grandmothers is still
alive in Antigua and the other died 16 years ago.
West Indies star batsman Brian Lara returned to Trinidad Friday
night to begin six weeks of rest after doctors confirmed he has
contracted hepatitis. Lara who has been ruled out of the team?s
forthcoming tour of India, spent close to a week in a Colombo
hospital in Sri Lanka undergoing tests.
On his quiet arrival at Piarco International Airport last night
after flying for almost a day, Lara said, "I am feeling
alright."
