West Indies cricketers will get 25 percent of the ICC mini World
Cup pot, according to a statement from the West Indies Cricket
Board (WICB).
After an extended standoff over terms of contracts proposed by the
ICC, the WICB and representatives from the players' union met in
Jamaica and hammered out an agreement over money for the mini World
Cup later this year.
Former Guyana and West Indies batsman Joe Solomon has come out
in support of countryman Carl Hooper who recently lashed out at the
practice facilities for Zone B of the Red Stripe Bowl in St. Lucia,
where the Guyanese, Antigua, Canada, the Windward Islands and
Trinidad and Tobago battled for a place in the semi finals.
Solomon, chairman of the Guyana Cricket Board's senior selection
panel, also took a swipe at regional administrators who, he said
could travel all over the region to witness Test matches but could
only make phone calls when the time came to make important
decisions.
Trinidad and Tobago fast bowling phenom Ravi Rampaul was named
MVP of the regional Under-19 tournament and was named to headline
an 14-man All Star squad to prepare for a possible tour to India
later this year.
The 17-year-old Rampaul, who finished the three-day version of the
tournament with a record 45 wickets (avg. 7.2 per) walked away with
three individual awards but was was the only Trinidad & Tobago
player named in the squad, which features four Jamaicans.
Rain in Jamaica robbed the West Indies Under-19 final (limited
overs version) of a classic showdown between the Windward Islands
and Guyana. The final was declared a no-result after bad weather
prematurely ended the game but the Windwards were crowned champions
because of their higher placing in the preceding three-day
competition.
Final Scores: Windward Islands 200-9 in 50 overs (Ezikiel
Francis 47, Liam Sebastian 45 not out; Z. Saffie 3-31, D. Peters
2-23, D. Mohammed 2-25). Guyana 61-1 in 19.5 overs (M. Purken 28,
R. Ramgobin 27 not out.
Former West Indies batsman Larry Gomes plans to admonish
Canadian cricket authorities for the country?s lack of serious
preparation for the regional under-19 competition.
"I don?t think they?ll be too pleased with my report about the
preparation and so on. When I write them, hopefully they will take
these tournaments more seriously," said Gomes, Canada?s coach
during the tournament in which they failed to make an
impression.
