Selecting the five West Indies cricketers for 2002 turned out to
be an easy exercise. The editors of CaribbeanCricket.com
shortlisted nine players who all had an impact on the regional
team's performance on the international scene this past year.
Some were obvious and some just barely made the grade. In no
particular order, these nine made the 2002 shortlist: Jermaine
Lawson, Chris Gayle, Marlon Samuels, Wavell Hinds, Pedro Collins,
Shiv Chanderpaul, Carl Hooper, Merv Dillon and Ronnie Sarwan.

Opening batsmen Devon Smith and Daren Ganga have been invited to
the World Cup training camp in Antigua, the West Indies Cricket
Board (WICB) announced Tuesday.
Smith and Ganga will be joined by back-up wicketkeeper Keith
Hibbert, all-rounder Ryan Hinds and pacer Daren Powell at the
preparatory camp which starts on January 12.

Jamaican opening batsman Leon Garrick was in "stable" condition
at the Linstead hospital in St Catherine last night following a
road accident on Mount Rosser in the parish.
On Monday night, a doctor told the Jamaica Observer he had not
yet decided whether to keep the 26 year-old Garrick in hospital
overnight.

Opening batsman Randy Thomas was among a trio of newcomers named
in the 16-man Barbados squad to prepare for the 2003 West Indies
four-day first-class competition.
The Barbados selectors also included opener Jason Haynes and
fast bowling all-rounder Ryan Nurse in the squad for the first
time. Nurse made his first-class debut when he played for the West
Indies 'B' team last year.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul will be named Cricketer-of-the-Year when
the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) holds its Annual Awards Ceremony on
Friday, the Board announced on Monday.
The Guyana and West middle-order batsman has had a prolific
season at the international level, both in the region and
overseas.
