DHAKA, Bangladesh West Indies’ Test and One-Day International (ODI) contingent will be subjected to a robust testing regime after they arrived here on Sunday for their five-week series, becoming the first international side to tour Bangladesh since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Caribbean side is scheduled to face the hosts in three ODIs and two Tests from January 20 to February 15 but will be without 10 first-choice players who declined selection because of fears over the virus in the country.
Health authorities here reported 849 new infections yesterday, and 22 more deaths. The overall infection tally stands at 523,302 and the death toll at 7,803.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has opted to engage in rigorous testing of the travelling party, with testing taking place prior to and during both the ODI and Test series.

Chris Gayle, Chadwick Walton, Sherfane Rutherford and Carlos Brathwaite were the four West Indies players selected to play in the Pakistan Super League following the 2021 Draft held in Lahore on Sunday.
Each of the six teams was required to select 16 players in the draft; three from the platinum, diamond and gold categories, five silver, and two each from the emerging and supplementary categories.
Gayle, arguably the best T20 batsman of all time, was a platinum selection for the Quetta Gladiators, while Rutherford was a diamond selection for Peshawar Zalmi.

With 13584 runs, 22 centuries and 85 50s under his belt Christopher Henry Gayle is arguably the greatest T20 batsman in history.
Gayle, who turned 41 last September, believes Nicholas Pooran, a player who KXIP Coach Mike Hesson described as the “young Gayle” back in 2019, possesses all the tools to be the heir apparent.
Pooran, who was Gayle’s KXIP teammate last season, impressed while scoring more than 350 runs in 14 matches during the 2020 IPL. And while he has not set the world alight for the Melbourne Stars in the ongoing Big Bash League, Gayle believes the 25-year-old Trinidadian is well on his way to becoming a great player.
“His batting is improving. He is getting better and better. I think he is getting to know his game, how to build an innings, which is very important; how to take down whichever bowler at any particular time. Once he can master those things as quickly as possible he is going to be even more dangerous,” Gayle said while revealing that the Trinidadian star, possesses other important traits as well.

Legendary West Indies captain, Clive Lloyd, insists the current crop of players must learn to play in all conditions if the team is to eventually emerge from the doldrums of world cricket.
In the aftermath of the recent squad selection for the West Indies tour of Bangladesh, plenty of eyebrows were raised not only due to the absence of 12 first team players but following the non-selection of promising young fast bowler Chemar Holder for the Test cricket squad.
“These guys need to play in those countries where it’s not that helpful and you learn to bowl a better line and length,” Lloyd told the Mason and Guest radio show.

West Indies captain for the Bangladesh series, Kraigg Brathwaite, is confident the second-string team will give a good account of itself, despite facing a difficult task.
The regional team, who are off to the third overseas tour since the sport was impacted by the pandemic, will be missing 12 first-team players. Team captains Jason Holder, Kieron Pollard, and Test vice-captain Roston Chase are among the players that opted out of the tour for health and safety concerns.
“We are all up for the challenge… it will be a tough series in Bangladesh but we have confidence and we have belief that we will do very well,” Brathwaite said.
