Cricket West Indies (CWI) Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams, has insisted players are well aware of the minimum fitness requirements needed to be considered for selection before even individual form is considered.
Adams comments come on the back of the recent non-selection of talented batsman Shimron Hetmyer for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka. The 24-year-old had looked in splendid form based on scoring a majestic 112 in the semi-finals of the CG Insurance Super50 competition, which lifted Guyana to the final. Hetmyer, however, clearly fell below the 40 percent stipulation.
“The policy asks for a minimum standard in certain aspects of the fitness testing. So on the yoyo intermittent test, that minimum standard is 40 and for a couple of years we have had selection tied to the achievement of that minimum standard,” Adams told members of the media via an online press conference chat on Saturday.
ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Lendl Simmons scored a match-winning century which showcased the dominance of Trinidad and Tobago Red Force as they easily beat Guyana Jaguars by 152 runs to win the final of the CG Insurance Super 50 Cup on Saturday night.
The opener made 146 off 145 balls with 15 fours and seven sixes as the Red Force scored 362-5 off their 50 overs after being asked to bat first at the Coolidge Cricket Ground. In reply, the Jaguars never kept up with the required run rate and were bowled out for 210 off 45.3 overs. Trinidad and Tobago recorded their seventh win in a row as they played unbeaten throughout the tournament.
ST JOHN’S, Antigua — Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel today named the West Indies squads for the CG Insurance T20 International Series and CG Insurance One-Day International Series against Sri Lanka at the Coolidge Cricket Ground (CCG) and Sir Vivian Richards Stadium (SVRS).
Chris Gayle the most prolific batsman in T20 history, and experienced fast bowler Fidel Edwards, have been named in the T20I squad marking their return to the international stage, while off-spinner Kevin Sinclair earns his first West Indies selection and left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein gets his first T20I call-up.
The T20I matches will be played under floodlights on March 3, 5 and 7 starting at 6pm Eastern Caribbean Time (5pm Jamaica Time). This T20I Series will create history as the first full international matches to be played by the official West Indies Men’s team at the CCG. The matches will also be the first West Indies T20Is to be played in Antigua since 2013. West Indies will use these matches to prepare to defend their ICC T20 World Cup title scheduled to be played in India later this year.
Former Cricket West Indies (CWI) president, Dave Cameron, insists the controversial eligibility rules put in place during his tenure were never meant to disenfranchise players.
The legislation, which was implemented as the region jostled with the cash-rich T20 leagues for the commitment of its top players, stated that players who did make themselves available for domestic competitions would be ineligible for international selection.
“It was never about not wanting players to play around the world. We respected that, we accepted that, but, West Indies cricket doesn’t have a product if we don’t have our best players playing. So we needed to find a way to get our players to have the understanding that you can’t play everything,” Cameron told the Mason and Guest radio program.
ST JOHN'S, Antigua –Shimron Hetmyer pulled Guyana Jaguars out of deep trouble and then went on to score his seventh List A century as his team recorded a massive 95-run win over Windwards Volcanoes in the second CG Insurance semi-final on Thursday night.
It was the fifth win of the tournament for the Jaguars who will now meet Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in the final on Saturday. The winners will be awarded the CG Insurance Sir Clive Lloyd trophy.
Hetmyer featured in a record fifth-wicket stand with all-rounder Raymon Reifer, as Guyana recovered from 63-4 in the 13th over to post 305-5 off their 50 overs at Coolidge Cricket Ground. They added 194 to surpass the old record of 159 set by Jahmar Hamilton and Devon Thomas of Leewards two years ago.
