Exclusive: The Suspension of Sean Devers

The on-air career of Sean Devers, one of the hottest young stars on the ball-by-ball commentary circuit, remained in limbo this week after a run-in with angry officials of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) has left him begging for a second chance.

Devers was removed from the Guyana commentary team for the sixth round match against the West Indies 'B' team at Bourda because of his perceived anti-GCB stance on a prior broadcast.

Accountability and the Guyana Cricket Board

It is unfortunate that every attempt to initiate a debate on the state of cricket in Guyana or the competence of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) descends into rancour. No one lightly criticizes an institution such as the GCB, which is part of the web of institutions of our society. Such a step is only taken when it is perceived that the activities of the Board have become a danger to the game itself. But criticism of the Board has drawn no constructive reaction but abuse, and as I shall later show, threats. This strong reaction can only mean that vested interests are now so finely intertwined with the administration of cricket that an attack on the Board is regarded as an attack on those interests.

Windies 'B' Put Guyana on the Ropes

The West Indies 'B' selection had Guyana struggling at 131 for five at the end of day three of their Busta Cup match. Replying to the Windies 'B' first innings total of 415, Guyana ended the day on 131 for five with Narsingh Deonarine not out on 46.

Big Ton for Stuart Williams; J'ca Leads T&T

Stuart Williams cracked an unbeaten 161 and Runako Morton was not out on 58 as the Leewards took the fight to Barbados, closing the second day at 321 for one, in reply to Barbados' 373.

While rain washed out all of the second day's play between Guyana and Windies 'B', Jamaica continued their strong run this year, taking first innings from Trinidad and Tobago while Bangladesh 'A' also took a first innings lead over the Windward Islands.
