Slowly, but not surprisingly, the truth is beginning to rise to the top.

The stories circulating about Bennett King's poor man-management and abusive approach to coaching come as no surprise to people close to the West Indies team. The sad thing is that King's departure has not stopped the negativity. In many respects, things have actually gotten worse.

Building new unions

It takes imagination to break away from old ways. Courage and conviction too. That is why change is never easy, because it means moving to new, sometimes untested grounds and that can be unsettling at best, threatening at worst.

The invitation to the president of the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA) to join the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) as a non-member director has troubled some. There are those who question the prudence of having a body seen as a trade union for West Indian cricketers sitting on the Board that administers West Indies cricket. What freedom would the Board have to discuss issues relating to cricketers in such a presence?

Whatever the players and coaches said after the match, there is no doubt in my eyes that the aggression shown between England and India went too far at Trent Bridge.

The way I looked at it is that any father would not want his son to see players reacting in such a manner and he certainly wouldn't want his own son behaving that way on a cricket pitch - and I think that all of the 22 players would agree with me.

WIPA: There will be difficulties to overcome

WIPA president and chief executive Dinanath Ramnarine says he will accept the historic appointment to the WICB board of directors "with cautious optimism and confidence."

"While in the past, other WICB Presidents have talked about improving relations with WIPA, Dr. Hunte has ‘put his money where his mouth is’, and I feel it is incumbent on me to do my best to make the process work without compromising the principles of business negotiations," Ramnarine said in a statement accepting the appointment as a non-executive director of the board.

New WICB president sets priorities

(The following are remarks by new WICB president Julian Hunte as the board's annual general meeting last weekend)

I am honoured to have been elected President of this important regional organization and I thank you for giving me the opportunity to contribute further to the organization and development of West Indies cricket.

I thank outgoing President Ken Gordon for the contribution he has made to this Board and the organization of cricket in the Region and to wish him every success in his future endeavours. I have said privately to Ken that I hope it will be possible to consult him from time to time.
