CWI announces major broadcast agreement in Sub-Saharan Africa

ST JOHN’S, Antigua — Cricket West Indies (CWI) today confirmed its third new multi-year broadcast rights agreement with SuperSport securing the rights to West Indies cricket until the end of 2024 in sub-Saharan Africa.

The four-year agreement will see SuperSport feature exclusive live coverage of all West Indies international home matches and regional tournaments played in the Caribbean on its television and digital platforms.

As part of the agreement, West Indies cricket will now be seen in over 54 African countries and islands, including South Africa, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and Kenya. SuperSport’s coverage starts with the recently confirmed West Indies vs Sri Lanka series which commences on Wednesday, March 3 with three CG Insurance T20 International matches. The agreement also includes the rescheduled visit by South Africa to the Caribbean in June 2021, a tour that had to be rescheduled from July, 2020 due to COVID-19.

Jaguars won't take Volcanoes lightly in Super 50 semi - Johnson

Notwithstanding the Guyana Jaguars’ crushing nine-wicket victory over the Windward Islands Volcanoes in the final preliminary round match on Monday, Captain Leon Johnson says he has no intention of underestimating their opponents when the two teams meet again in the second semi-final tomorrow.

On Monday Guyana bowled the Windwards out for 153 before cruising to 155 for one with 128 balls to spare. It was a victory that would have boosted the confidence of the Jaguars knowing that they would face the same opponents again in the second of the two semi-finals three days later.

However, Johnson, whose side has not won the tournament in 16 years, says they are not taking anything for granted.

“We are not going to be complacent after a good victory on Monday. They have one of the better players, Kavem (Hodge) returning to strengthen their side,” he said.

Former batting coach labels calls to replace Holder 'overreaction'

Former West Indies batting coach, Toby Radford, has suggested calls to replace all-rounder Jason Holder are an overreaction and would stick with the current captain, despite the success of Kraigg Brathwaite in Bangladesh.

Brathwaite was widely commended for his role in leading an understrength team to a 2-0 win away to Bangladesh earlier this month. Holder, on the other hand, was one of 12 players to pull out of the tour after citing health and safety concerns.

“I think they surprised everybody not least of all Bangladesh, probably their own supporters as well.  They performed really well.  But it’s very easy to get carried away, isn’t it? You have a couple of big wins like that and then suddenly we have done it because Kraigg Brathwaite is captain and Jason Holder wasn’t captain,” Radford told the Mason and Guest radio program.

CWI High-Performance Fielding Workshop helps drive on-field improvement

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) hosted a High-Performance Workshop on Tuesday, February 23, designed to improve the standard of fielding in the game around the entire region. Coaches from all six territorial professional franchises were involved, as well as several players now participating in the CG Insurance Super50 Cup as part of CWI’s new Coach Development Programme.

The on-field presentation was led by Trevor Penney, the current West Indies Men’s Assistant Coach, an experienced international fielding coach who has also performed a variety of high-profile coaching roles across the IPL, CPL, and Australian domestic cricket.

Penney, alongside fellow West Indies Men’s Assistant Coach, Rayon Griffith, shared cutting edge fielding techniques already in operation to prepare the West Indies squads for the upcoming CG Insurance T20 Internationals, CG Insurance One-Day Internationals and Test matches against Sri Lanka.
