Chris Gayle said it was nice to be able to win the battle between himself and mystery spinner Sunil Narine in the Kings XI Punjab’s emphatic victory over the Kolkata Knight Riders in Sharjah on Monday.
Man-of-the-Match Gayle, 41, scored a 29-ball 51 in a second-wicket stand of 100 from just 60 balls with Mandeep Singh, who top-scored with an unbeaten 66 as KXIP ran out eight-wicket victors.
Gayle took 17 runs off Narine’s bowling that included two of his five sixes that were creamed over wide long off the Trinidadian in the 11th and 13th over, respectively. The Universe Boss just failed to remain unbeaten getting out from a slower ball from Lockie Ferguson in the 19th over with KXIP just three runs short of their target.
Narine, meanwhile, went wicketless while conceding 27 from his four overs.
Gayle said it was great to get one up against one of the best T20 bowlers in the world.
“Sunil has got me out so many times. He is the best spinner in the world. So when you get a wicket like this, when it is not turning much, you got to cash in,” Gayle said even as he praised the match-winning knock from Mandeep, who is mourning the loss of his father.

On the heels of news that Andre Russell has withdrawn from the 2020 Lankan Premier League it has emerged that the all-rounder did not request a No Objection Certificate from Cricket West Indies that would allow him to play in the Sri Lankan T20 league.
CWI CEO Johnny Grave told Sportsmax.TV this afternoon that CWI never received a NOC request from the Jamaican all-rounder to play in the Lankan Premier League. The NOC is a document provided to players from member nations of the International Cricket Council that allows a cricketer to play in a domestic competition of another member nation.
Shortly after declining a place in the West Indies squad, news broke that Russell had been drafted by the Colombo Kings. Then, in a later development reports surfaced today that said Russell had withdrawn from the league citing injury.

Teenager Jayden Seales’ surprise inclusion in the West Indies touring party for the two-Test series in New Zealand was a move aimed at “fast-tracking” the inexperienced fast bowler’s development, convenor of selectors Roger Harper has said.
The 19-year-old Seales was last week named as one of six reserves who will accompany the 15-man Test squad despite not having played a single first-class match or domestic Super50 game.
And even though the more experienced 23-year-old speedster Keon Harding was overlooked by selectors despite traveling with the Test squad on the England tour last July, Harper argued it was not a case of Seales being pushed ahead of other players.
“Remember when we went to England we took 10 reserves,” Harper explained.
“Here we have just six reserves and the opportunity here was to include Jayden Seales in an effort to give him some exposure and sort of fast-track his development, let him have an opportunity to experience what the environment is like at the highest level with a view to fast-tracking his development.

Former West Indies fast bowler, Tony Gray, has expressed surprise at the selection of all-rounder Keemo Paul to the West Indies squad for the upcoming tour of New Zealand, as he deems the player not suited for Test cricket.
The 22-year-old Paul, who has earned 3 Test match caps so far, was previously invited to join the team for the tour of England but along with Darren Bravo and Shimron Hetmyer turned down the series due to health concerns.
“Keemo Paul to me at this time is not suited to play Test cricket,” Gray told the Mason and Guest Radio program.

Cricket commentator Ian Bishop believes Jason Holder’s CPL form over the past two seasons was largely responsible for his recall to the Indian Premier League this season.
The West Indies captain was contracted by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in September to replace Australia’s Mitchell Marsh, who injured his ankle in SRH’s first match of the 2020 IPL season and was ruled out for the entire season.
The 28-year-old Barbadian repaid SRH’s faith in him on Thursday when he took three wickets and was involved in four dismissals in his team’s emphatic eight-wicket victory over the Rajasthan Royals in Dubai.
“What catapulted him back into the West Indies T20 side was last year’s CPL where he picked up 11 or 12 wickets in the Power Play because he swings the ball, he has nice bounce and he was particularly impressive in that phase of the game,” said Bishop, who said his batting also played a role.
