Kingstown, St. Vincent And The Grenadines - Heavy rain and lightning forced all three matches in Round Four of the Rising Stars Under 19 tournament at Arnos Vale, Park Hill and Cumberland respectively to be abandoned without a ball being bowled on Sunday.
The rain interruption means that a new champion will be crowned this year with defending 50 overs champions Guyana (10.2 points), currently out of title consideration.
Also with the highly anticipated top of the table clash between Barbados (15.8 points) and host Windward Islands (14.8 points) being washed out, now weather permitting on Tuesday, both teams mathematically have a chance to win the tournament based on points allocation permutations for bonus and fast bowling points, set out in the CWI tournament playing conditions (see attached).
Victory for Barbados over bottom of table Leeward Islands can see them emulating their junior counterparts who won the Under 17 tournament in Trinidad & Tobago last month.
While Windwards toppling fifth place Jamaica can give them a chance to win their first Under 19 50 overs title since 2013.
Of the maximum 6 points attainable in a game, Barbados gaining at least 5.1 match points will see them being declared the winner. For Windward Islands, they must gain at least 1.1 points more than what Barbados would have gained in their game, to be crowned champions. If both teams are tied on points, net run rate will decide the winner, as both teams will have won the same amount of matches
GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Cricket West Indies interim selection panel named Fabian Allen to replace forKhary Pierre for the third and final T20 International against India. The match will be played at Guyana National Stadium on Tuesday in the MyTeam11 Twenty20 International Series, co-sponsored by Skoda and Fena. First ball is 10:30am (9:30am Jamaica Time).
Allen, 24, has so far played nine T20 Internationals and 10 One-Day Internationals. He last played for West Indies in the recent ICC Cricket World Cup in England where he made his maiden half-century at the international level.
Robert Haynes, interim chairman of selectors said: “Fabian a lively and energetic allrounder and someone who we believe can win matches for us. We witnessed his performances in the Caribbean Premier League last year and also saw in the recent World Cup what he is capable of. We are planning for the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia next year, so we decided to include him here.”
Away with one World Cup and on to preparations for another. With the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup to be hosted by Australia in autumn of next year, preparations for the teams involved are currently under way. The West Indies now has a chance to do one better than they did with preparations for the 2019 50-over World Cup, for which they were massively underprepared. The Caribbean side will battle India in a three-match T20 series, which will see the teams in action in Florida, twice over the weekend, drawing curtains in Guyana on Tuesday. Cricket West Indies has named the following 14-man squad for the first two games of the series: John Campbell, Evin Lewis, Shimron Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran (wk), Kieron Pollard, Rovman Powell, Carlos Brathwaite (c), Keemo Paul, Sunil Narine, Sheldon Cottrell, Oshane Thomas, Anthony Bramble, Jason Mohammed (replacing Andre Russell), Khary Pierre.
The squad sees a resumption of normalcy in WINDIES T20 set-up, following the use of the previous series (versus England) as preparation for the ICC Cricket World Cup. Therefore, Carlos Brathwaite reassumes his role as captain. The squad also includes Guyanese, Anthony Bramble, a return to international cricket for the first time since September of 2017 for spinner, Sunil Narine, as well as the reemergence of Rovman Powell. Keemo Paul, the hero in West Indies’ last T20 series win, returns after his World Cup snub. There was, however, no place in the squad for Sherfane Rutherford, even after the injury to Andre Russell.
FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida – Cricket West Indies interim selection panel has named Jason Mohammed as the replacement for Andre Russell in the first and second matches of the MyTeam11 Twenty20 International Series, co-sponsored by Skoda and Fena. Mohammed, the experienced 32-year-old, has so far played nine T20 Internationals and also captained the West Indies in T20 Internationals and in the 50-over format.
Russell was named in the original 14-member squad for the first and second matches T20s subject to him passing a fitness assessment prior to the series. The allrounder experienced some discomfort while at the GT20 tournament in Canada and informed the interim selection panel of his unavailability for the upcoming series.
West Indies are the reigning ICC World T20 champions and will face India at the Broward County Stadium in the United States on Saturday and Sunday. The final match will be played at the Guyana National Stadium next Tuesday. First ball daily is 10:30am (9:30am Jamaica Time).
“We welcome Jason Mohammed into the squad for the first two T20 matches here in Florida. He is a player with lots of experience in all three formats and – having done well for Trinidad & Tobago as well as Guyana Amazon Warriors,” said Floyd Reifer, West Indies interim head coach.
“It is not easy to the fill the shoes of someone like Andre Russell, who has dominated T20 cricket all over the world and helped West Indies win the ICC T20 World Cup on two occasions. We believe Jason is capable of good performances and we back him to perform at this level and win games as well.”
