The inaugural Tony Cozier and Reds Perreira 23 and Under T-6 Regional Cricket Festival is scheduled to bowl off from April 14-18, 2022 in Barbados.
To be held under the theme of 'One Caribbean, One Sport, One People, One Love' signifying the importance of togetherness within the region and creating the necessary investment for the development of young cricketers, the tournament is also being held in honour of two of the region’s greatest cricket commentators, Red Perreira and the late Tony Cozier.
“We are seeking to honour Mr. Reds Perreira and pay respects to the late Mr. Tony Cozier, who were very good friends and by extension, two of the greatest West Indian cricket commentators and writers that we have witnessed on this planet,” said Hamilton Lashley, the founder and director of the foundation.
“These gentlemen have been mentors and an inspiration to many youths and it is against this background we are seeking to stage this tournament on the Easter weekend of 2022.”
West Indies Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite says the team will be looking to finish the year strong as they prepare to face Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series at Galle next month.
The series, which will take place from November 21 to 25 and November 29 to December 3, will be part of the 2021-2023 ICC World Test Championship. In preparation for the series, the West Indies team is currently taking part in the Best vs Best intra-squad matches and Brathwaite insists the team is brimming with confidence and ready for the challenge.
“Sri Lanka is a very strong team, especially at home and as a team, we are looking forward to the challenge,” Brathwaite said.
“We know it won’t be easy. The last time we went down there we did ok, it was a couple of years ago and we look forward to the challenge,” he added.
West Indies great Michael Holding is hoping Quinton de Kock recognizes he made a "silly, dumb mistake" after refusing to take the knee at the T20 World Cup.
South Africa were without talismanic wicketkeeper De Kock for Tuesday's clash with West Indies after he refused to play for "personal reasons".
Cricket South Africa (CSA) later confirmed De Kock was absent for the Group 1 Super 12 match in Dubai due to his refusal of a board directive to take the knee, which has become a gesture of support and unity in the fight against racism.
Holding, who has regularly spoken about the need to combat racism, expressed his hope that De Kock will learn from the episode and deliver on his promise going forward.
"If you believe in a cause, you do what everyone else is doing to support that cause. You don't automatically find your own way to support that cause because then no one will know you support it."
Jason Holder is hopeful West Indies can reproduce the jubilation he felt during the winning moment against Bangladesh in their final two T20 World Cup Super 12 games.
The Windies prevailed to keep their hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive as they successfully defended 142-7, a total they reached in an innings that saw captain Kieron Pollard retire in the 13th over only to return for the final five balls.
Holder, drafted into the squad as a replacement for the injured Obed McCoy, came straight into the side and the former captain delivered critical runs at the death, hitting two sixes in an unbeaten 15, and claiming (1-22) with the ball.
"The last ball that Russell bowled. Obviously, four runs, one ball to bowl the perfect yorker, which was a dot ball, was phenomenal," Holder said afterward.
"A lot of jubilation went through my veins especially, and then all the guys obviously played really well."
ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) today announced the two teams for the second and final Best v Best three-day match at the Coolidge Cricket Ground. The match will be played from Monday, November 1 to Wednesday, November 3. The teams will again be led by Kraigg Brathwaite and Jermaine Blackwood.
The Selection Panel has made several changes with most of the bowlers switching sides to offer the batters preparation against different types of bowling and vice versa. Fast bowlers Kemar Roach, Alzarri Joseph, Preston McSween and Chemar Holder, along with spinners Imran Khan and Jomel Warrican are now on the Brathwaite Team. Fast bowlers Shannon Gabriel, Nial Smith and Jayden Seales, along with spinners Rahkeem Cornwall and Veerasammy Permaul are now on the Blackwood Team.
